McDermott finally fixing the "tacky" defy problem... Hopefully.

I purchased a defy shaft with a cue of the month. Regardless of what everyone says, I prefer the hit and feel over just about every shaft. Deflection difference is negligible when you get into the revo, cuetec, black, defy etc. shafts. That being said, the defy shaft became unusable because it was so effing tacky. I tried the slick cue stuff, pledge, 3 different gloves... It didn't matter. I chalked it up as a lose and bought a Jacoby Black. Which I really like but prefer the hit and feel of defy still.

Long story longer, I decided to email McDermott and told them that the shaft is unusable do to the tackiness. They emailed me back saying that they can put a permanent graphene coating on it that helps significantly. Also attached a shipping label which is awesome. They said the coating will be on all defy shafts starting in June. Not sure if there is a cutoff for when someone purchased a shaft that they will put the coating on. McDermott is usually pretty good about customer service like that. As long as you don't mind waiting for the turn around time. I have not used the shaft with that coating yet as I just sent it in. I did however put some graphene polish on it just to see. (Don't tell them though.🤫) It did make a significant difference... Until it wore off. I will update once I get it back from them but haven't seen anyone mention it when I searched. Hopefully can help someone else who had the same issue.
 
Glad to hear they are solving the problem, I hope you are happy with the results. I wonder why McDermott has had an issue with this and nobody else has. Then again maybe a different resin gives it the better hit but can become tacky.
 
Graphene is weird stuff. It flakes off pencil lead in a mono-molecular layer but when they're done with it, it's super strong and still weighs nothing. How is it applied to the resin?
 
Will give it credit. The Defy has the softest hit I’ve seen and it’s obvious why someone would appreciate it.
 
I hope someone near me gets one of the new ones.
I had two buddies get the old style but I was unable to try them due to the sticky finish not sliding through my bridge hand at all.
Since then they have both sanded the weird finish off and had no issues with the way they play/hit.
I moved before they fixed the issue.

It's that absorbing material they add in, works like what they do with tennis racquets, but not everyone is a fan of the deadening of the hit feel, including me.
 
this nano technology stuff hasnt been deemed safe yet for extended use in close quarters and your skin. it can cause very serious blood, and brain issues if too much is ingested to your bloodstream. that amount hasnt been determined.
it may be fine but i would certainly not play without a glove. ill stick with wood.

are you saying that the process they are using to apply the graphene is nano technology or that the graphene itself is nano technology.

That's probably really poor advice. I've know guys that pick balls up off of fairways littered with goose shit and god knows what and clean the ball off in their mouth. You just never know, they may lick their shaft.

I've done a ton of cars,trucks and boats with ceramic coating and one vehicle with graphene. I was wondering how it would work on the carbon shafts when you see these guys constantly wiping . I wouldn't think it would last doing that.

Yes... I would say that if you're willing to clean balls in your mouth, that you would definitely lick a defy shaft.

Coated, or not.
