McDermott joint

My son has one of those cheap McDermotts with the 3/8x10 thread and I'm wondering what it takes to change out the joint. Do they screw out or they glued in?

Reason I'm asking is I have a xtra 314 shaft in 5/16x14 that he would rather use if it's changeable or would it be easier to make short extension with the correct threads on both ends. We play alot of 8'+ tables so an extension would actually be useful

The joint screw on an inexpensive McDermott is threaded in and requires quite a bit of heat to break the glue bond. Then the hole would have to be plugged and then set up for the 5/16x14. As in every job, steps must be followed.
Or
Remove the brass insert in the shaft. Plug it and set up for the 3/8x10.
Either way. Measure the joint o.d. first on both pieces.
Or
Get the extension!
