McDermott shaft on a viking butt?

Hi

I've got a spare McDermott shaft and a spare Viking butt. How easy would it be to match them together? I couldn't care less about fit & finish etc, but want it to be playable.

The viking butt is 5/16/18 quick release and the McD shaft is 3/8/10.

What would be the best way of doing this - is it easiest to remove the pin from the viking butt and replace it with a McDermott pin?

Finally, how long will this take and how much?

I really don;t know anything about all this so any advice on how to proceed is appreciated.

You can change the pin or install an insert in the shaft. Shouldn't take to long for the fix. One day turn on the work.
Changing the pin will let you use the shaft on both cues. Install the insert will limit the shaft to the Viking only.
Your call the cost will be about the same ether way you go.

Thanks for that. Couple of Q's

1. How easy is it to get new pins - do McDermott send them out? I can't see anything on their website.

2. Can you explain what you mean by installing an insert? The McD shaft is bigger than the Viking pin, so I take it this is something that goes into the shaft to make it fit snugly? If so, how will this affect the hit?

Sorry if this is basic, but this is all new to me.

I believe the insert he was referring to would be If You wanted to fit the shaft to the Viking pin. Typically It would be the piece of threaded brass that goes into the shaft for the pin to screw into. You've probably seen them in other shafts with the smaller pins.

There were a few different McDermott pins made, but If You are referring to the larger full threaded pin with the coarse threads, then It's probably a 3/8-10 pin, which is a common one, and can be obtained very easily. Most repair guys will have at least a few on hand. Normally the threads that fit It would be turned into the wood of the shaft, so no insert is used, although sometimes they are plugged with a core of other materials, then drilled and threaded. If You put a Mcdermott pin into the viking butt, then You should not need that. The pin should fit the shaft the way It is. If however you want to use the viking pin, then the shaft may need cored and/or a brass insert installed to fit the viking pin. Most of this depends on what pin the viking has in It now, and what type of threads you have in the Mcdermott. If by chance You have some way to take them & post them here,Then A picture of the joint faces of each piece could go a long ways in people being able to tell You exactly what You have, and what the best options are.

Since you state that you have a 'spare Mcd shaft' & a 'spare Viking butt',
I don't think that your intent is to swap shafts back & forth.
I believe your intent is to mate a shaft to the Viking and leave it there.
If that's your intent, leave the pin be and just have an 18-thrd insert installed in the shaft and be done with it.
The only modification to the insert is to run a 17/64 drill-bit thru it so that it fits the Viking QR pin.
Mr. Bucholtz is correct in that this is a quick & easy task.
