Memories of Larry Hubbard

I was very sad to learn that one of the true greats of American pool is no longer with us. I saw Larry Hubbard play many times, and have nothing but respect for him. The first time I saw him play was at a tournament in Burlington, Iowa. I saw him give Danny Jones the 8 ball in the practice room at the hotel........and I will never forget the break he had. He was probably the first American player to use the side rail break on a nine ball rack. This was back in 1975 or 1976. It was amazing to watch. Besides that, he was just a good all around player.....and a great straight pool player. I remember seeing him on the road many years after that, and you could see the toll that lifestyle had taken. He was, though, a classy guy and a fierce competitor. My condolences to his family and friends.

My first memory of Larry was the Learn From the Best video (VHS).

I had the pleasure of meeting Larry once and that was at his 2010 BCA HOF induction. It was obvious he had health problems. BUT the day after the induction He walked the halls of the US Open 9 Ball and shook hands and thanked people for coming or voting. It was obvious this walk was not easy but he smiled, shook hands and talked with everyone. He made it a point to speak to every vendor that lined the halls. Thank you Larry and RIP.

The last two memories I have with Larry Hubbart

The Last two memories I have with Larry Hubbart were both special times. A autographed picture of Larry Hubbart, Terry Bell My wife Sandra and myself at the APA Christmas party at Harrah's in St. Louis Mo. which I will attach. the second was indeed at the 2010 Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the 2010 US open. He was a very special person, a Great Billiard player, and the true and only ICEMAN. He will truly be missed by many APA members and League Operators.
