Mersawa shafts

I don't know, I have done break shafts out of Maple, Flat laminated maple, Purple Heart, Ebony and Cocobolo, and Curly Maple.

Michael, A friend recommended Purpleheart. I hadn't thought it, but I found tapered shaft blanks to be fairly reasonable. I have done simple repairs for about a year on my mini-lathe in a small rural area. I'm certainly no cuemaker, but I wanted to make a break cue for myself. My plans are to take a Mersawa house cue and cut the butt off, then fit a purpleheart shaft to it. I want to join the two with a brass pin and insert, and turn double black linen rod for the joint collars. I plan to use a melamine ferrule and a linen reinforced tip. The joint could have been simpler, but I wanted to try to learn something in the process. I'm excited to begin this project! If it doesn't hit like a ton of bricks, at least it will be a different looking cue. :D Do you have any other ideas or final words of advice? Thanks for your time.

Jim

I really enjoyed reading your personal profile, and how you started. :)

Stick, check Rolaine.com.
He has purpleheart shafts.
Also, Cuecomponents.com aka Barringer. They have a 50 dollar minimum though.
If you want a good source of maple shafts, PM me.

Your design sounds very nice. I wish you the best of luck. Stay patient. One word of caution, I would use a stainless pin instead of brass.

Thanks for the advice.

My friend had Greg Sowder make him a shaft out of Ash. Hits super solid. I had always wondered about having a billiard cue made out of Ash reminiscent of a snooker cue. Might be kind of cool looking.
