I recently tested a friend's Mezz cue with a United joint, which is a piloted joint. He has 3 different shafts for it. The joint screws tightly and you feel a nice resistance as you are turning it, but that comes from the actual screw having tight tolerances. As the pilot arrives in its place there is no extra resistance, I've looked closely and it doesn't look like the pilot is touching the female part.
On some Schön Cues that I have seen, the screw is not as tight and you feel the extra resistance when the pilot comes into play. It is clear that the pilot is stabilizing the joint.
So my question is, if the pilot is not touching and the screw is already a tight fit, does the pilot actually do anything?
