Mobile, Fairhope, Gulf Shores, AL Pool Scene?

I'm retired, play pool 4-5 afternoons a week, and considering relocating from the Phoenix area to the Mobile, AL / Fairhope, AL. May also have a look at Gulf Shores.

I don't care if it's a fancy billiard hall with 20 9-foot Diamond tables, or a simple bar with 2-3 7-foot tables in good condition. I'm a good player, like good competition but not into heavy gambling. Occasionally, play in tournaments, but prefer a good afternoon group that plays 9-ball and ring games.

We will be visiting the area before the end of the year. What places should I check out while we are there?

Runway and Breakers are both on Airport Blvd in Mobile... Hard to not like the equipment, people or action.....

Why are you leaving Phoenix for the Gulf Coast if you don't mind me asking?

I was thinking if another Katrina hit us, I would try out Phoenix.

Wife and I became really interested in fishing and boating when we spent 3 months in Cape Coral, FL earlier this year. She's always loved being by the water, any water, and fishing. The fishing in the Phoenix area sucks. REALLY sucks.

We've both been in Phoenix for over 20 years. The 115 degree summers can get very tiresome (we've gone away for the summer since she retired two years ago). Also, we don't find the people in Phoenix to be all that friendly. But I wouldn't discourage ANYBODY from moving here, unless they hate heat or want to go fishing. (if you have kids, be careful of the school systems.) Lots of places to play pool, all ranges of players, lots of leagues and tournaments. You may have to drive across town (30 miles), but that's not so bad.

We started out looking at Florida, but for a variety of financial reasons, have switched gears to Alabama.

Glad to hear about Runaway and Breakers - and if anyone can suggest others, especially in the Fairhope, Orange Beach or Gulf Shores areas, I'd appreciate it.

I live right between Mobile, AL and Pensacola, FL, about 25 miles due north of Gulf Shores. I will tell you there is no establishment with decent tables anywhere near us, without traveling to Mobile or P'cola. The only places to play in Baldwin County are bars with beat up Dynamo or Valley 7 ft tables.

Like 'The Renfro' mentioned earlier, Mobile offers Runway Billiards (6 or so Diamond 9ft Pros, 8 or so Valley barboxes), Breakers Billiards (7 Diamond 9ft Pros, 12 Gandy 8ft, 10 Valley barboxes) and The Billiard Club (4 Diamond 9ft Pros, 3 Gandy 8ft, 13 Valley barboxes).

Pensacola has Nine Mile Billiards (2 Diamond 9ft, 5 Gold Crown IV 9ft, 8 Valley barboxes, 12ft Snooker table), Legends Billiards (2 Diamond 9ft, 4 Diamond 7ft, 12ft Brunswick Snooker table.) and New York Billiards (9ft Olhausens, 9ft Billiard tables).

*These descriptions are to the best of my knowledge, be it from memory or what someone has told me.

Florida, Alabama and Mississippi beaches are better looking, especially if you are in to sunbathing but for saltwater fishing, Louisiana is KING. :DThat's just my opinion and I'm sure others might have a different one.

Thanks, cycopath. So, if we're living in Spanish Fort, Daphne or Fairhope, I'm within 30-40 minutes of decent pool halls in Mobile.

If we're living in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, I'm withing 30-40 minutes of decent pool halls in Pensacola.

Correct?

Spanish Fort/Daphne 30min to Billiard Club, Breakers. 45min to Runway. Via I-10
Fairhope add another 10-15min to times.

OB, GS you have to take the beach road into FL, which is slower. To get to Nine Mile which is north P'cola would take 60min. To get to Legends Billiards would take 45min.
