Moisture and Climate

Hi guys,

I posted this in the main forum but I think that these questions might be better answered here:

One of my biggest worries is that while I'm in the USA now, I'm returning to asia soon, and I will be dealing with the tropical climate. How does this affect my cues? I was thinking of getting an Instroke, but for better humdity protection, I might settle for something better. Someone even recommended me to put silica gel beads into my case to suck up that moisture.....

Well then, what are the factors that really make a cue warp? How is it accelerated in a tropical climate?

Some have also told me that regardless of the cue case I use, unless I put it in a climate controlled locker, it still may warp. I'm not asking for a solve-all solution here, but just something simple that I can do to reduce the likelihood of my cues warped....no one likes warped cues!!!

I would appreciate any replies!

Rapid changes in temperature are the worst thing for cues. Do you have air conditioning, in the place where you are taking the cue? Usually when taking a cue into a different environvent, it is best to leave it in the case for a short time, so it can very slowly acclimate itself to the change. As for dessicant, remember that extreme dry can be just as harsh on a cue. Rapid moisture, release and, or absorbtion both have like consequenses. Instroke is as good as you could hope for in a leather case, when talking about climate control. You could search for "Cuemidor" it is an air-tight case. Another option could be to sell the cues , then acquire new cues at your destination, that are already acclimated. Wood is very tempermental and no matter how cautious you are, things can go wrong.

Hi Tracy,

Thanks! I will not be keeping them in an airconditioned area, no....and yes I am definitely thinking of an Instroke. The Cuemidor looks good but I haven't actually heard of it until you mentioned it...I've never seen anyone carrying it either. Also, the configuration is also for just a 1x1 which I don't think is very smart, since most cuemakers include 2 shafts now! I really don't think I can afford buying new cues and all when I change location so really what I'm looking for is something extra I can put into my Instroke to help protect my cues.....I will keep that note about the rapid change in moisture and dryness though!
