Hello everyone!
I hope you all are having a good new year; this year is the year!
For a while, I haven't been playing as much pool as I wanted to, however, I kept myself busy from going to the gym and playing tennis. FYI, I am not as good as Charlie Williams and the others but I'm willing to try
Two months ago, I got this call from this guy that works for the San Francisco Examiner. Actually, my father told me that he called when I was in school, finishing up my exams. So, the guy, David, called me back and he wanted to interview me because every month, he does an article based on a different kind of sport. He told me that he had never done an article based on pool/billiards; he was really excited about interviewing me. I was so overwhelmed because someone actually referred me to David, and I thought that was very sweet of him to mention my name!
When the interview came up, I just mainly talked about my father. Being a widow and having five children is tough on a single adult, emotionally and physically. I realized that without him paying for all the airfares and traveling expenses from playing in the Junior Nationals for 7 years and traveling with us kids to World Championships...and foremost, taking so much time to make sure we were ready for the competitive world...I am greatly thankful. No body can replace my coach...my father.
The article came out just recently. Here's the link: http://www.sfexaminer.com/sports/Junior-pool-champ-still-Rakin-the-competition-80375567.html
I was greatly satisfied by how the article turned out. It wasn't only about me, but my whole family and what we've been through...especially my father. BIG KUDOS to David for doing this article and my father for being a big inspiration in my life, as always!
As for my 2010 schedule, I'm not sure. I'm playing in the Regional Tour Championships in Bellflower, California. If I win, I get paid spots to the WPBA. If I take top 9, then I receive invitations to all stops. We'll see how it goes from there.
Have a good new year guys and gals! I'll keep you posted!
Best Wishes,
Mary Rakin
