My Bob Dzuricky Custom Cue

Like another member here, this is my first custom cue so I am very excited. Here are the specs and details of my order. The cue will have a 3/8-10 SS pin, black linen phenolic collar, birdseye or curly maple forearm with 4 ebony points, each having an ivory diamond inlay, 4 veneers - black, green, red & white, white with black spec Irish linen wrap, polished & pressed but uncoated, Bushka style trim rings at B,C,D,& E locations, ebony buttsleeve with 4 ivory diamonds inlays (larger than in the points), ivory colored buttcap (synthetic), total weight to be 19 oz. There will be no shaft included with the order. Time to build will be 14 weeks from receipt of deposit. I am pumped! :D

I have one update on this so far:

Bob received my deposit today. He said he will pick out the veneers and glue them up this week, and send a pic of that step which I will share YEAH!!! :cool:

I'm sure you'll be pleased with your cue.Bob is my friend and I play with a DZ also.Excellent workmanship is his trademark.
 
I think I will be pleased as well. His work is well regarded from what I have seen. He is anal retentive, a good trait in a cue maker. I am the same way. :D
 
I am probably going to have Bob make me one shaft to go with this cue. 12"-14" pro taper, 12.5mm tip, Aegis 2 ferrule, Talisman Pro Hard tip would be specified. Any input on that?

Why would you need any input?
If that is what you like then that is what you want to get.
 
Well, IMHO.
The 12-14" "Pro-Taper" (whatever that means) would be whippy.
Bob has a really nice CNC setup and he can cut you any taper you want.
It might be best for you to try a "modified" "Pro-Taper", where the shaft starts out @ 12.5mm and ends up @ 13 or 13.5 (or even 14mm) at the end of the "Pro-Taper".
It makes the transistion much easier to the rest of the shaft for (IMHO) a better, and more smooth follow through.

Also, the other good reason for having the shaft tapered this way is that if it is too stiff it your liking, it can be tapered down.

On the other hand, if you get the shaft pro tapered @ 12.5mm for the entire 12-14", and its too whippy, you are stuck with it that way.

You can take all the wood you want to off, but you can't put any of it back.

You're right on that point, but another point is that I have been playing a 314 shaft for over a year and should probably stick to that. I was considering having a local cuemaker convert my current 314 joint, the Fury tru-lock, to the 3/8x10 if that is even possible. If it is not, or would not turn out properly, I would probably be better off having Bob make up a 314 to fit the cue.

In order for your existing shaft to work with your new cue, the local cuemaker would have to take out the insert, and bore and plug the shaft and thread that to match the new cue.
If the 314 shaft is bigger or smaller (at the joint) than your new cue, it would be annoying.
It would be best to have Bob match a new one, or just send him the old one so they fit perfectly. Or just send the old 314 and get Bob to fit a new one, then you will have two shafts that are supposed to play the same.
It's up to you and your budget.

Yes, it would be best to have Bob match a new 314 to the cue. I may do that if I determine that the funds are available.
 
Update

Here is a note that Bob sent me regarding the veneers, and he attached a pic which I am posting. Warning, the pic is large so you can see the detail in it.

I sheared the veneers this morning but haven't glued them up yet. I buy the veneer is "leafs" which are approx 12" wide & 6' long. I cut them to 11" lengths, then cut them to 1.250" wide. Yours are cut & ready to be glued.

Many cuemakers buy their veneers already cut to size. The problem is that the colors are usually very uneven because they are also dyed after they are cut to size and the edges get darker than the center. The large leafs I get are very consistent in color, as you can see.

I emailed Bob about custom matching joint protectors. They will be ebony with 4 ivory diamond inlays in each piece. I gave him the ok on those.

They will look like this aside from the inlay shape.

Bob said he has a nice piece of curly maple picked out for my forearm. I am happy that he went with curly as that was my preference.
 
Really? I like Highly figured birdseye or curly birdseye, but to each his own i guess. My dad also prefers curly to birdseye.

Okay... NOW I'm jealous! I had Bob make me a cue about a year ago also. I just sold it to a guy in England! I collect ebony and curly maple cues and this one looks like it will be a beauty.

I agree completely! Paul Fanelli is sending me pictures of the various stages of cue building and it does build the excitement. It sounds like your cue will look very nice! If you'd like to check out my latest pic it's under update #2 in the cue gallery!
