My Kilby

Ron Kilby is a maker from Oregon that got his start building 3C cues. His philosophy of cue building is grounded in that discipline. This is a pool cue, and as such has a pro-taper shaft of 12.8 mm. But it does incorporate many 3C cue technologies, such as: All-wood joint. That is a wooden pin integral with the shaft, going into wooden female threads in the butt. A short, capped ferrule (ivory). I came up with the basic design, and after some back-and-forth we settled on what you see here. There are 60+ separate pieces of wood in the butt. The joint ring is linen-based phenolic. The diamonds are ivory. The main woods are Maccasser Ebony (grip/butt sleeve area) and Gabon Ebony (forearm). I love butterfly spliced cues and this one - in my opinion - is just breathtaking. The shafts are his own pie-segmented laminated shafts, the tips are Moori mediums. Deflection is about zilch. It has a stiff but soft hit, if that makes any sense. You have to have a good stroke to get action on the CBe - since you're getting none from shaft deflection. Great cue, terrific builder. Not promoting anything, just passing along info - check him out at <www.caromcues.com>

Jim Oswald from Billiards 'n' Bagels in Gresham, OR has about 8 of his cues in his case. All of them pretty cool and strange at the same time. I was there a few weeks ago checking out the selection. Man he has some nice cues. The largest dealer in the US, per number of makers-wise. I don't remember what they were going for, I should have asked to shoot with one. He lets you shoot with any cue if he knows you....hell I had 3 Southwests lined up one day and drooled over two of them.

I am another Kilby cue owner. Pizza Bob and I have e-mailed each other about them, but I thought I'd post for those asking questions as kind of a back up opinion. I have a custom kilby that is birdseye forearm, malachite inlays, a snakewood butt with ivory and malachite, leather wrap. Some phenolic rings like you see on some cues on his website. I got 2 of his segmented pool shafts and a billiard shaft in case I run across a billiard table. The cue is as Bob describes, solid, low deflection, but has a sensitivity to it that softens it. Hard to describe exactly. The balance is wonderful and it feels lighter in the hand than it is. It has more thickness in the joint and the base of the shaft than regular pool cues. And with the wood joint it is definitely a cue from the carom world. Which is not a bad thing for those of you who have never hit with a billiard cue. The only warning is that because of the longer shaft as the screw is wood integral to the shaft, they won't fit in some cases. If you get one, don't expect it to fit in a Porper. It won't. Instrokes are just fine. But they are cues worthy of consideration that won't set you back a fortune. They aren't dirt cheap, btu the prces are very reasonable IMO.
