My reflection on.....where we were....where we are

Just thinking......the biggest problem with pool today is the mystery has been removed from it. People try to treat it like golf. Golf is a sport made for the rich and famous, fancy clothes, big time sponsors. TV time.....pool will never get there. The ladies tour in USA tried it in the late eighties and nineties and had some success on ESPN.....now it is gone. Dont misunderstand me. Tournament pool is wonderful for the game......promoters who put up their cash to keep entry fees down. I applaud them. Still, in this country pool is ahout 2 guys locking up in some back room fiiled with smoke and wonder, and railbirds yapping and betting big. I could go on but wont.
And my dad did give me money to gamble on and he was a great dad. He worked his entire life in a factory making duct tape until he died early at age 49. Then I worked nearly 30 years in a factory until I retired

I think alot of the gamble in pool results from the lack of good tournament money. Back when people really wanted to play the sport for the money, gambling was their only good option because tourney money stinks so much (think compared to tennis, golf, etc.). More necessity than anything.

If the tournament scene ever evolved into bigtime money, the gambling scene would dry up as a result. I think most would generally prefer to make money above-board in tournaments instead of back-room games if given the choice and all other things being equal. Anybody who's ever gambled long enough usually has a horror story or two to make tournaments awfully attractive if they paid better.

Can't disagree with what you wrote but that stands for the pros and it's understandable to a certain point (Thorsten is a pro and doesn't gamble, living proof you can manage without that crap). What about the amateurs/fans instead? All I'm reading in these forums is about bets, side bets, odds, cash etc. Do they need to make a living out of pool too? Not really, I would think.
