Need help with my new ToolBox III

Dear Everyone,

Some questions about use of Bassel's Toolbox :

Why does our lathe must be attached outside (front) of the tookbox instead of inside as all pictures and videos we found on the net? Also, why did you put red scotch under base parts?

How to fix/align the headstock in the good axe?

The hand wheel used to move back and forth the tools holder moves alone. Needs to hold it with left hand.

Shaft cleaning : If I follow the schema I received > that way a large part of the shaft is "inside" the headstock so this is not possible to clean the shaft on it's total lenght.

Thanks everybody.

Mustapha

Your English is quite understandable. In fact, it's better than some Americans I know:smile:

I think you conveyed your problems well.

Might I suggest you try a messenger like yahoo or the like? I know it might be difficult to arrange a time that works for both of you, but at least he could kind of walk you through problems and answer questions right away.

If you have International text messaging? I know I can add that for 25 bucks a month, then drop if and when I don't need it. Might be good just so this gets resolved faster.

Image 31: to clean. Can't you just move the the chuck on the left to the left more and drive the shaft with a maintenance arbor? It is impossible to create more separation?

Image 29: FIRST!!! KEEP YOUR HAND AWAY FROM THE SPINNING CHUCK!!!!!

It also looked like you were holding the cross slide wheel to keep it from moving. Should be able to adjust the gib so the slide stays put. You shouldn't have to hold it.

The out of round could be a number of things: shaft isn't round(normal for a used shaft because of owner abuse and it's made out of wood and wood moves), collet isn't concentric inside and out, spindle has runout(this can be compensated by lightly boring the jaws). Regardless, you are going to find yourself shimming shafts sometimes to get the ferrules closer to the shape of the shaft. after that you either file or sand to match the shape of the shaft.

I would suggest that you get a copy of Chris Hightower's book. He might even be able to sell you a digital copy that could be sent over an email. If it is ok with Chris, you pay him AND I can find my copy, I'll scan it.

What is a maintenance arbor (translation in french :embarrassed2: please?)?
I should have received more bed extensions. For now, i do not have enough lenght for a total access to all the shaft. And for house cue made 1piece, nothing to do if no more bed extensions.

I thought maybe i could start making a clean at one end of the shaft, (and install the shaft other side in a second time) turning it right/left and clean the other end. But it is not what i expected when i bought this lathe.
I have a lot of vibrations when i push to the left end the left chuck.

I could make a skype session with bassel, but i'm Mustapha's spouse... Translating for him here. He doesn't talk english at all. Won't be easy to talk "live" for him with bassel. But, not against the idea to try.

Image 0030: I can't open it. Typically you drill a hole in the center with a drill chuck in the tailstock.

I don't see any tailstock at all.

You could just use a small boring bar to make holes. You typically want to finish bore the hole anyway, especially with less precise equipment.

It's is like a joint protector, but made out of metal. you clamp down on it to spin the shaft between centers.

Je ne parles pas francais tres bonne. Vous parlez American c'est manifique. :)

I'll find a pic and post in a second.

Here is an example of a 3/8-10 maintenance arbor set and then a concave live center in a tail stock...

On video IMG_0229, do you see a boring bar?

I will repost video "0030" soon. I don't know why, file is damaged.
find the good Centering- / axe is my major problem...

Thanks for all your time and hints!

ok, I see. But, with my lathe, I can install the tailstock with the concave live center at the right side of where I have the motor attached, which no 3-jaw at left side of that part. So, that way, I would have to unmount and install that part (motor + 3-jaw) to the left side end of the bed.
This is not the schema Bassel sent me. For information, I send picture I received. On the video, you should see that I can't access all the shaft if I follow that schema. Your solution seems better... but my lathe set up must be different that it is right now I guess.

I've never seen or heard of someone cleaning a shaft that way(with joint end INSIDE the headstock).

BTW, I was SURE I HEARD vibration before you made mention of it.

You are welcome for the help. I'm glad to be somewhat useful.

Hopefully, someone who is familiar with this setup can be more helpful.

If you need more help I will do my best.

Bon chance! (sorry if I messed up the male/female....it has been....awhile)

OK, I repost a video to explain our axe-centering problem on http://gallery.me.com/zab : IMG_0233
thanks to all hints I can get! All lathe I worked with always had a tailstock mounted on a fixe part that was automatically place at the right middle axe without any ajustment (made by eyes) needed.

About that, you're right. Wheel moves alone, as shown on video "Handwheel turns alone" on my gallery of videos.
But I don't know at all how to adjust the "gib" (what's a "gib" ... translation tools isn't perfect! ;)

There is a little hole I can use a tool inside to tight, but that has no effect.
Unmounting that part, I discover that there was numbered grids that comes invisible when remounting the wheel. (only grids are visible, numbers become hidden. that's sad).
I need to know how to "tight" that wheel so it's stop turning down.

Hope Bassel's will go out of his bed soon to help! :boring2: (about 6 hours of difference between Swiss and Michigan :o)

Despite your complete unprofessional and totally out of line approach by posting bits and pieces of our emails back and fourth, twisting the truth and playing the victim roll.
Let's set couple of the ground rules. You could have posted the you bought a tool box lll with out disclosing any of the special prices or breaks that I gave you due to your limited budget, and then you go on and describe a tool box ll, when I emails you may pictures of the tool box lll and I said that the tool box ll is no longer available. You knew what you were getting and you know that the lathe does not do house cues either, I was upfront about everything, and for you to assume that the lathe is ready to ship as soon as you pay, was very typical. Those are custom made machines, you new that too.
I sent you all the picture of the tool box lll, and you never insiuated anything about house cues.
The only thing missing from you package is a foot pedal, due to being out of stock.
The five holders you were suppose to get are
2 regular holders (which you got)
1 boring bar holder ( only available with premium tooling with you opted out off)
1 cut off tool holder ( only available with premium tooling with you opted out off)
1 tailstock attachment holder ( you got)
1 tip trimming tool holder (you got)
1 tip positioning tool ( you got)
Cut off tool ( you got it too, but not the QCTP one)
The issue here is that you are asking for the missing parts which apparently have no idea what they are, cause if you did know, then you would have realized that you already got them. Besides asking for the shaft cleaning setup, and if you didn't know hat the other parts are for, you should have asked me first, instead.
Well that covers the so called missing parts.
As for your slide being too lose, I will be kind enough, despite all the false accusation you posted, to post a you-tube video on how to adjust the slide gib, as for the backlash, well they all have that.
Lastly I watched couple of you videos when you were trying to trim a black fenolic ferrel with a BORING bar( I am surprised it even cut anything at all) instead of a right/left hand cutter, which was also included with your tooling.
So far everything I see is just an inexperienced guy trying to do cue repair, and blaming the lathe for your lack of knowledge on how to use it.
I was unavailable for couple of days and you post all this stuff. If you really needed to get a hold of me, you could have called me on my cell or even Skype video call which I offered you from day 1 with my screen name so you can call me if needed.
FYI: I am fluent in Arabic too, and can understand some French, but you chose to do this instead.
You totally jumped the gun. I will try to help you as amuck as I can, but you need to learn the basics of cue repair and the use of proper cutter for the proper applications.
PS: The Tool Box lll with Tompson rods setup has the highest precision cutting capability than any toolbox or a standard dovetail repair lathe I have ever made, it is a total shame that you can't see that and that's all due to the improper use of the machine

Thank you for helping Mustafa, that was very kind of you.

You are welcome. I hope I never came off as criticizing you or your lathe, as that was never my intent. That vibration could have been something as simple as the table cloth preventing the lathe from being level.

Bassel, what are these? Their cost?

About $35 for both
I don't usually sell them, just include them with my package.
The tip trimming tool is basically the same thing Dave's cue repair is trying to sell for $24.99, the only difference mine attaches to the quick change tool post as a holder.
Here are some pics.
Tip trimming tool

Tip positioning tool
c6e4e011-af5a-b5a5.jpg

Tip positioning tool, it's a delron rod with s 14mm recessed cavity to hold the tip in the tail stock chuck and press it in to glue it on.

Ps:Charlie I started including those recently, sorry they were not included with yours lathe, email me you address and I can mail you a set.
I just added a picture of the top slide.
Here is how to adjust the gib on.
First you have to unlock the 2x 4-40 screw located inside the Right T-Slot
You turn both one full turn counter clockwise, then you adjust the side set screw, keep in mind when you are done, you will need to lock the gib back up with the 2x4-40 screws. Keep in mind when you lock those screws the slide will hey tighter, so you will need to set the side set screw accordingly slightly looser than desired.
Hope this helps you MUSTAFA in adjusting the slide to your liking
Regards

The original poster just needs to work and figure out how to work his lathe. Unless someone can give hands on training, that's the only way. In the long run I believe teaching yourself is usually the best way, although it takes longer and a lot of patience. JMO

I agree. He needs to learn safety before that though. I thought for sure he was going to wack his hand badly....

It is small, but I'm willing to bet that chuck can make a statement if your get wrapped up in in..
