Last night at Diamond Billiards..i was craking the room up with my normal sence of humor...when a discussion of a shot came up. Some very good older players were talking about cues and deflection... they were setting a shot up to test deflection of thier cues..i hit with an OB1 so noo need for me to test hehe..but the shot didnt set well with me. They placed a ball almost in the center of the table and the cue ball deep in the right corner pocket...so you litterly had to jack up on the cue ball to snap the ball in the lower left hand corner.

I spoke up and said um guys i really dont think that shot shows anything about deflection ..if you miss it it isnt because of deflectio its because you did hit center axis of the cueball very well. I stated that deflection is the squirting of the cue ball while it is traveling when it has been struck with english. I got the young and dont know nothing kinda look and decided i wasnt super sure about my take on deflection to continue making my point.

So were they correct in saying the shot they were setting up would show if your cue had some deflection or was i correct...or were we both wrong.

Any help would be appreciated

The extremes show flaw of stroke and flaw of equipement. When one balances the other, it still comes down to stroke.

Are you talking about a straight in, center ball, jacked up shot? If you are, then that has nothing to do with deflection. Making or missing that shot is due to how you stroke it. The different deflection of different shafts becomes apparrent when spinning the ball.

Here is a simple setup to test deflection.
You need to play it with left English.

With a low deflection shaft you can pocket the OB with a parallel cue.

Another shot I used to do to show deflection is this next straight shot
I would hit it with extreme side spin and shoot it really hard.
With a parallel cue the OB will be pocketed with a low deflection shaft but will be missed with a regular shaft.
