I am in the market for a new custom cue but unfortunately I have no clue where to start considering this would be my first custom. Wondered what everyone would recommend. Thanks for responding.

Hmmmm

A starting price with a max will help knock out quite a few makers out of the running and thus narrow your search considerably.

How much do you want to spend?

Many cuemakers build the same cue (same hit, weight distribution, length, tapers etc), but in varying styles from plain to fancy. Granted they can customize the specs, weight, joint, taper, length as well. The super billiards expo was a great place to look at different cue makers or other shows if you research ones you can get to.

I would see if locals have custom cues you can test hit, or local billiard shops.

Overall I would determine a few basics, weight you like, length you like, balance you like (50/50 balance, maybe slightly rear heavy) want a leather wrap, linen, no wrap. You can do this some production cues to get a feel for the basics.

Then ask for recommendations from this board on who likes what they have and why, who has good customer service, reliability.

Great Point!!!

I was thinking anywhere from 800 to 1500 being the max.

More Detail...

I am thinking a 50/50 weighted cue, right now I am playing with a 13mm 19.50 ounce and that feels pretty good. I was actually thinking of linen for the wrap or no wrap at all...

This is generally hard for the first custom.
First you want to know:
Tip Dia
Shaft Taper
Balance point

Then Looks
.
Then Price

Hmmmm

where you from.....maybe support a good local custom cue maker....

For that kind of price range you can get a cue from most custom cue makers. Try starting with one in your area and see if you like the way any of his cues hit or feel in your hands. At least then you will have a starting point for what you like or dislike besides ferrule size and weight of the cue you have now. You might find a lighter cue with a different balance feels much better... or not.
