Andy Segal came from behind to win the New England Open Artistic Pool Championship. He trailed Lucasz Szywala throughout the last round starting 6 points behind. With two shots left Szywala needed only one successful shot among his 6 attempts. Andy managed a successful attempt in the next to last series of tries thereby narrowing the gap slightly when Szylawa missed all three. Again on the last shot Szylawa missed all three attempts at sudden death for Segal. Andy came up last and missed his first two tries. On his last attempt at the hardest shot on the program he made it and bested Szylawa by 6 points.
Both first and second place finishers beat the previous best tournament score of 230. Andy had 241 and Lucasz got 235. Mike Massey came in third with 200, Nick Nikolaidas just nosed out Jamison Neu 191 to 190, Jameson having achieved his best ever score.
Room owner of Shoooters in Southington, Ct, Sal Conti, put on a great tounament and showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in this discipline. He was also voted the sportsmanship award by the players.
The artistic players have come up with a format that is not only interesting but also exciting. They could use an updated leader board after each round, however, to add to spectator interest.
After the tournament Massey, Rossman and Tournament Director Steve Lillis did a few exhibition shots that greatly impressed the crowd. Steve set up the butterfly shot in a couple seconds and then managed to miss a ball. He then set it up again with two blocking balls and missed the same pocket. Then he put up a 14 ball variant of the same butterfly shot and made all 14 balls.
