Hi!

Im a newbie here, but im no newbie in the sport of pool. Ive been playing pool since i was 16, Im almost 20 now. 3 yrs has passed since.

I must say im now addicted to the sport that i sometimes use some of my study time for playing games with other people. Oh, I also have talken to Efren and Francisco a number of times especially when he gets home from a tourney.
Although Im a filipino, they are not my idols, my idol is the Iceman Mika. I dunno, probably because our style of playing the game is similar.

WEll, enough on the intros, I joined this forum to look for tips on how to improve my game, and it seems i found just the right place.

Im a pretty above-average player who can run-out a rack of 9 ball if i managed to spread the ball very well on the break. But we filipinos usually play rotation on pool halls (one of our secrets why filipinos play good, although its not a secret anymore :D ) as a matter of fact i lost a match a few hours ago.

My problem is, i cant make a good preparation after making a shot, i sometimes overdraw or overhit the ball, given that we play 15 balls, its pretty hard to prepare for the next ball.
My shots are not also consistent, sometimes, i even miss very easy shots. Probably due to mind stress or something psychological.
Im also finding difficulties pocketing the ball when the cue ball is frozen on the rail.

Also, the way i shoot the ball is pretty basic, i only apply top or low spins depending on the shot. I dont know how to pocket a ball by applying left or right spins. Whenever i start applying englishes other than top or low spins, i miss the shot. The cue ball just dont travel the line my mind is projecting.

Those are main weaknesses, ive been asking people better than me regarding these issues but in the place im living in, it seems i cant find a good advice...the place where efren emerged, Manila...:D As a matter of fact, my cue stick was fixed in one of the pool halls efren used to play. The cue smith (whatever you guys call em) knew him as a matter of fact and when efren got the world championship, he gave him some money to buy more pool tables.

Anyway, i hope you guys could share some tips. Thanks. My height is only 5'5" and my cue stick weighs 19 oz, 12 mm brunswick tip, and ivory (i dont know the term in english, the white one which holds the tip...sorry :D)

play 14.1...it's good for concentration

ever play "cribbage"? that's a cool game, especially for practise. you pocket balls in pairs that add up to 15....6 and 9, 7 and 8, etc. so there is planning required and an occasional tough shot as well.

what's 14.1?
im sorry if the question's pretty dumb :D
but the only games i play are:
rotation 15-ball
straight 15-ball
western 8-ball
9-ball
cuthroath

14.1 is straight pool.

what's straight 15ball?

btw,,,,do they televise a lot of pool in the phillipines? like espn-phillipines or something. and are there vhs tapes available of 9ball and 15 rotation championships?

is there a hot young player on the rise?

pool is getting bigger and bigger in Asia. ESPN-Star does broadcast a lot of pool matches, and shows replays also. They are one of the sponsors of the San Miguel Asian 9-ball which was cut short because of the outbreak of SARS in asia. There are not much pool videos for sale in the Philippines although there sure are a lot of action that you can watch live. Sadly, there is no rotation championships at a national level. They last time they did a rotation tournament was in the 80s I think. The hottest young players from the Philippines at the moment would probably be Corteza and Orcullo.

well, straight 15-ball is a game where you can shoot any ball after the break, same as 14.1?

in local channels, they dont televise a lot of pool matches, they only televise local tournaments. seems they cant afford it...poor country...:D

but luckily, we have cable subscription so we have espn and star sports. i can watch pool on those channels.

there are no rotation championships here, the game is only used for money games...:D

if there's one hot young 19-yr old player rising from here, that has got to be me!!! joke!!! :D

i agree, dennis orcullo and lee van "van-van" corteza are the hottest young players here atm...so watch out for me...:D
