Afternoon ladies and gents.
After a 6 month wait, I received my new Meucci Hi-Pro 1, equipped with a 30" Meucci Carbon Pro shaft, 11.80mm tip, with a Kamui Black medium tip.
I am well aware of how people feel about Meucci cues. Some love them, some hate them. There was a time where QC issues were a problem. The recent feedback I got from the forum is that Meucci had gotten their act together and QC issues had been solved.
With that in mind, and wanting a quality American made production cue, I started to look into Meucci cues because I wanted a traditional design reminescent of the cues of the 60's and 70's, combined with the modern technology of carbon fiber shafts and extension ready. I ordered the whole kit, cue/shaft, extension and joint protectors straight from Meucci, and they were upfront on the fact that the cue would be built when my order was received so it would not ship immediately from stock, and they gave me estimated lead times. I ordered straight from them for two reasons: more options to choose from than most dealers and Meucci participates on the GovX discount program; I was granted a very generous military discount on the whole package.
The cue arrived a few days ago. It was packed very well, with fragile decals all over the shipping box. Inside, I found a very attractive box with the Meucci logo, made in USA decals, and I was impressed to find the cue protected by foam that has been cut to protect the cue and shaft. Top marks for product presentation.
First impression upon seeing the cue was wow! The butt, shaft, extension and joint protectors are flawless. I can confidently say that this Meucci is nicer than my custom cue. I cannot find a single flaw on the cue. I was aware of Meucci's practice of covering the linen wraps with polyurethane and I have to say that although it defeats the purpose of a wrap, the wrapless feel makes it less "distracting" on my hand. No issue with it. The cue is extremely well balanced and it is easy to get a nice level stroke and follow through.
The Carbon Pro shaft is great. I like the combination of a filament wound carbon shaft with maple inserts on both ends. Whatever they have done on their design, I must say that the shaft hit resembles playing with a laminated maple shaft; no pings, hollow sounds or vibrations. Very low deflection.
Only criticism is the joint pin. I feel the flat faced pin could use some radius to avoid damaging the joint pin threads or shaft insert when putting the cue together. One has to be careful. Regardless, joint is solid once assembled.
Overall, I am super pleased with my new cue.
