Need some guidance regarding New York City Poolrooms. Going up for several days at the beginning of December and looking for advice. Staying in the Hells Kitchen area of Manhattan and will be around the Times Square area. Any suggestions on where to play?

If you don't plan on leaving Manhattan, your choices are limited. I'd only recommend Amsterdam Billiards (4th Avenue & 11th Street) and that would be my first choice for the entire city. Once you leave Manhattan, I think the places to go are Masters or Carom Cafe (both in Queens). Masters is the action location and primarily a poolroom. Carom Cafe is just a sight to see if you like 3-cushion.

It's been a while since I was there - back then (2000/2001?) Amsterdam had an upper west side location on Amsterdam and an upper east side location on 79th, I think. When did they close those?

Amsterdam East was closed 6/1/04 and Amsterdam West was closed 12/31/06.

Too bad. Their current location looks like it might be near where the Corner Pocket(?) was at that time. Smallish room a coupla steps down from the street. I met Wei there for a few games of 1-pocket.

It was called Corner Billiards and it's the exact same location. Corner Billiards closed in the middle of 2006.

Yeah, I just looked up Amsterdam's website and read about that and saw pictures. I was afraid they'd lose their luster, but it looks like I needn't have worried - nice looking place! Are table rates outrageous?

It depends on the time and day. There are "Power Plays" (specials) throughout the week which you should always ask about. The hourly rate ranges from $5.50/person/hour to $8.50/person/hour depending on the time and day.
