hey guys, i've been playing pool sincei wuz little, but recently i've found myself playing more and getting more serious about it. I don't know much about cues so last night i went wit a buddy of mines to this pool hall we alwayz go to. I decided to purchase my very first cue stick. I bought a fiberglass Excalibur cue stick. I played with it and did alright, I never played wit a fiberglass stick before and i immediately noticed how light it was. Afterwards, i told my buddy to pick out a cue he would like cuz his birthday is coming up so i figured it would be a good gift. so we went to look at the cues and one caught my eye. he told me that he would take the one i bought and i could buy the one i just saw for myself. so i bought a Players cue stick. i didn't get the chance to play wit it yet though.

Now my question to you is, i told him he can't use the fiberglass stick till his bday. but now i'm thinkin that i shoudl stick wit da fiberglass and give him the Playes one. Which one is better?? Whats the difference between besides weight? Which one should I stick with?

They are both pretty decent starter cues, but i think i would stick with the Players. I hate fiberglass shafts. If you stick with the players it will be less of a change when you upgrade to a really nice stick. Notice that no custom cue maker offers a fiberglass coated shaft, and you will never see a pro use a fiberglass shaft. I think Blud might be the person to answer this question, if anyone hear knows anything about cues its him.

Just my 2 Cents

I thought Earl and Allison both use off the rack Cuetec's. Not true?

Not that I disagree with fxskater, I would pick the Players also, and for the same reason.

I agree...I too would go with the Players over the fiberglass! I'm pretty sure there is a huge difference between the fiberglass shaft and the Cuetc shaft. The Cuetec has a fiberglass coating over wood, correct? To me the Excaliber fiberglass shaft is going to have more stiff feel to it, and it will be difficult to adjust to a quality wood shaft in the future. I've never owned a fiberglass shaft only shot 3 balls with one in my entire life...don't like it! IMO

i hate fibregalls or any kind of composite material the hit is just disgusting, gross, just doesn't feel right....well if you like it then i guesse stick with it but hit with the players first....anything with a maple shaft is better than a composite to me. I just get more feeling with a maple cue.

Hay the very first I had cue was a malpe plain jane cue.And at that time it was the best cue i ever spent 40 dollars on .And now 10 years and thounds of dollers later . Sometimes i wish i had that cue .But that the past .Players is a very good start cue .And if you ever go to the city stop by Blatts Billiards on broadway. And look at some of there start cue ..have fun and happy shoting .Just look on fo'the dred with cue and the smile .he's in Deadstroke''

Well me personally I have an excalibur fiberglass/grafite cue and that was my first cue. now it is my breaking cue. The only thing i did not like about it was that from just a couple of strokes from the skin on my bridge hand the cue would not stay smootha dn getting a proper stroke consistantly was a pain. where i play the owner only uses player cues and my friend lou loves his players cue. So getting back to the wood shaft vs. the fiberglass shaft. I love the feal of my Lucasi the shaft stays smooth much longer then the grafite shaft.the onyl thing is you have to clean the wood shaft and the grafite i just use a cue scuffer to keep the shaft smooth and taht works for me. Hope that helps some. Im also pretty close to your area maybe ill see you around somewhere.

great feedback guys. Thanx alot for all your help. I ended up stickin wit the Players cue and gave my buddy the fiber glass. We played the other day and man, that players cue felt really good. the only thing is when i hit the ball really hard i kinda feel it shaking inside, but its a good cue i guess for my first one. What would be a good choice for a second cue? I'm willing to spend $130.... any suggestions?

Shaking inside? Is your weight bolt loose? Also, I would stick with the players cue for now. Save up for a better cue in the future, when you are a better player also. The cue is just a tool. Spend the money playing rather than getting a new cue.

i agree with Elicious about saving up for a better cue.........you can get a decent cue for 130, but why not save up for a while and figure out what you really like (weight, hit, shaft size, appearance).......personally, i would go with a custom sneaky pete or maybe something a little more fancy.......custom cues can start around just under 200 for a sneaky pete to thousands for a more extavagant look......whatever the price, the hit and feel is whats important........if you really wanna splurge, i saw a Balabushka on Ebay for 50,000 dollars

I agree with Elicious...save and practice (practice saving) IMO, I would save up for a Viking or McDermott as your next step. You can get a great cue for under $250 even down to $200, this price might include a case also. Check out www.zimsrack.com for any cue/case specials and other sale items occassionally also.
I would get involved in a weekly tournament or two as much as possible and find a player that you think "there's no way I can beat him" and play him a lot. Watch him, study him, learn from him, his mistakes and your mistakes. Play against players that are a higher caliber of player than yourself and watch your game improve quickly. Be patient, "Rome wasnt' built in a day"!!
Good Luck and welcome back to the pool world!

Save and practice, or practice saving? Those are two different skills :P

Seriously though, I agree with Zim. Play people who are better than you. I think you learn much faster this way. I think I'm the better player in the group of friends I play with (not trying to brag, I'm really not a good player), and I've watched my skills stagnate the past couple of months. At the same time, I've watched them improve steadily. I think there's more motivation to try harder when you lose, but when you win, it seems like you're doing good enough, and you don't put forth 100%. At least that's how I think my mind works.
