No lathe, best way to trim sides of tips?.

I've been doing my own tips for a while, but would really like to know if there are any tools to help trim my tips to diameter.

I know Bert Kinister makes a trimmer, and Joe Porper (though I've owned Mushroom Grazer and didn't like it), but I'm lloking for something safer.

Are there are any other tricks for trimming tips to size if you don't have a lathe or access to a lathe?.

Thanks. :p

I've been doing my own tips for years. I find that a 12.5mm Elk Master (hey, I like a soft tip on my playing cue) fits perfectly, no trimming required. That is not an answer to 'how to trim without a lathe', but may be an idea for next time, try to find an exact fit. Before I would use a very sharp (ie new) razor knife ... ya, my ferrule has a few scratches now, but I'm not that fussy, the cue still works fine ... well mostly anyway.

the porper shaver not the little one with the pad but the one that is kinda square looking and has a burnisher shaper and rougher plus it cuts the tip down to the ferulle without hurting it. it cost about $75.00 bucks and is well worth it ,it comes with a extra cutter blade and the cutter blade can be resharpened i used them in a pinch and they work really good. call porper are one of his dealers and they will set you up.a razorblade works nice to, just face the tip down away from you and take the blade and push firmly downwards and it will cut it real close then a little paper without hitting the ferulle and a burnisher and your done. i hope this helps i like the first one the best and is a great investment and it will fit in your case. Thanks Bob.

I'm using layered Talisman Pro Hard tips and have been trimming them with a sharp utility knife, (the ones with the snap off blades).

I was under the impression that cutting from ferrule side to dome can cause de-lamination problems. Some people on this forum have suggested cutting around like an orange peel or down towards the ferrule.

Is it safe to cut from ferrule to dome on layered tips?.

Anyway, I will do some research into the Porper big shaver. This is the thing you are talking about right?.
