Heh. From my relatively exhaustive post searching I believe Brunstone is synonymous with a can-o-worms. Yet here I am.
I recently bought a circa 1960 Sport King, which is currently partially assembled. I've been intending on leveling it and reusing the old cloth until TheRealKingCobra comes through my village on his way to his already booked jobs, which is at an undetermined time (not his fault, let's not start). I'll be happy enough playing on a "fair" table for a while. Unfortunately I ran into the whole Brunstone vs slate issue, and I'm officially confused, not to mention concerned.
I don't give a hoot if it's slate or not, however, I've seen mention that Brunstone can be damaged relatively easily, including whilst shimming. Now THAT gives me pause. I'm pretty certain I'd burst into tears if I FUBAR'd it. That said, pretty much everything I've read said that the Brunstone bed is 1 & 1/4" thick (or 1 & 1/6th, per Glen). My eyes are oldish, but I can still read a tape measure and the bed is definitely 1", period.
So... Is the bed likely slate, not Brunstone? Or is there 1" Brunstone? Am I worrying too much about damaging the Brunstone, if that's what it is?
This enquiring mind wants to know, and TIA for any factual advice shared.
