There is an interesting archive for all things Cornish I found on IG - Kresen Kernow (a recently formed central archive aimed at digitising and preserving some of Cornwall's historic content - we are a people who have lost a lot of our historic texts, culture, and ways of life in the face of anglicisation throughout history).
English billiards used to be huge there (It stayed maybe for a little longer than in other places, as it is a rural area where things are slow to move on), and then snooker took over in my Grandads generation. My dad still insists on a short round of 'English Billiards' as a warm-up for a snooker.
There are lots of photos of my Great-grandad playing billiards. My grandad and father playing snooker. I was never really interested in them before, but am finding more and more interest in the history of the game. Will dig them all out next time I get back home.
I found this image by George Ellis, a great photographer of less-documented people of the era. It has some Indian army troops playing billiards with Cornish officers, using some broomstick looking ferrule-less cues. Thought it was a pretty cool image.
Was wondering if there was anyone else who had similar old images they thought were interesting. Would love to see them.
