I just started shooting pool again after 10 years. Its been about 4 weeks now.Shot in a Tournament and got 3rd for $50.00 the next day won 1st for $125.00 at pro billiards here in orlando. then 3rd again for $35.00. I just shot in a Tournament last night and lost my 1st and 2nd match. I was out. The guys I was shooting any A player could beat. I gave the match away both times. You know when you have a 1 foot shot and you miss. Its like OMG. well it was like that all night. I went home, thinking im not going to shoot pool again. It was that bad. lmao.

So what do you guys do when its like that ? or can someone tell me what happen last night. Im guessing my mined was not on billiards last night.

Put in more table time on a regular basis (daily).
Do some drills.
Compete more often.
Put a little pressure on yourself.
Don't worry. Be happy.

Lay off for another 10 yrs and it will come right back to you.

I think you were playing on instincts and doing great. Then you started thinking. That always messes me up.

I think this situation happens often. Although, a ten year layoff is a long time I’ve seen this happen time and time again. Maybe not to your extent but someone who has stopped for a few months or even a year. They still know how to pocket balls and what to do on the table. It’s the finer points of the game that are a little rusty. IMO the player has no aspirations to do well, at first, they only focus on fundamentals and basics. Then a week later they admire their recent success and start expecting it. And their game drops a bit.

Or, as you said, you could have been thinking about something else and just had a bad night.

And as a side note, if last nights tourney was at Pro Billiards I can understand why an accomplished player could go two and out, even without a layoff. If I didn’t know better that’s one tourney that God himself could go two and out in. That is, if they are running the same tourney format on Mondays that they have for the past several years. It’s an incredibly huge handicap tourney for top players; it’s kind of ridiculous really.

What is ridiculous about it?

They rate players from a 5 to 13 (I think) spotting a ball for each difference in skill level. A 13 spots a 5 the last eight balls each and every game.

yes it still rated like that 5-13. im a 9 there now wheeler let me. because i have not played in 10 years . he knew me back then.
but i placed 3rd that night. and wheeler had to give me the last 5. then told me after the match i was going up. oh in the match race to 5 with wheeler, i shot 2 times and lost.

Adam has the patience to play that hadicrap game. I get tired of giving up the last 5,6, or 7 in a short race. That tournament is a battle of luck & who has the patience to play safe 100 times a night.

I think hadicrap is affirmative action for pool and should be only for newer players. Not the same ones for years trying the same old sandbag tactics...if they want that let them join the APA.
