One of the best shots i've ever made

yesterday, i was having my weekly session with a local A+ player. we play 4 or 5 sets to 11 one day a week. he used to beat me pretty handily, now its getting tight.

anyway, from play such a good player, i'm usually kicking a good amount. it gets irritating, but after a while it definitely pays off.

the very first game yesterday, i broke, didn't make anything, and he left me in this safe position.

START(

%[b7Z8%\o5C8%]Q1M9%^a7[2%eB5a3
)END

the only way to hit the 1 ball was to go 3 rails. i was pretty confident in hitting the 1, and thought it had a chance to go in. not only did it go in, but i could see the 2 ball for a safe on the next shot. i know the angles are off in the picture, but it shows the rough idea.

this is probably one of the best shots i've ever made.

feel free to share some of your great shots as well.

Blows my 1 rail kick that I posted out of the water. Great shot VAP!

i dunno, that was a pretty tough kick you had yourself.

like i said, i was almost sure i would hit the ball........but i probably couldn't make it again in less than 25 tries. it was one of those shots where you're just trying to hit it, as anything is better than ball in hand.

That's exactly what I was thinking on mine too. I have giving up BIH. Awesome shot man, and you did it when it counted.

Nice kick, VAP! Mine isn't fancy, but it turned an almost certain loss in 8 ball to my victory. It is just a two rail kick, but the speed had to be critically slow. I hit it just right, and just nudged the 5 ball into the rail, blocking his 8 ball. He missed the kick, and I won! I love this shot because it was my only chance and it worked perfectly.

I'm not sure if this came out right because it's the first time I've ever tried to actually use the wei table. I had this shot in a 9b tournament and I cut the 9 along the rail to the corner pocket that was the farthest from it.

Then in Reno one year, I shot this shot.

I shot the 7 for a 4 rail bank and the cue slid over and made the 9. The guy had me 7 to 4 in a race to 8 and I beat him 8 to 7.

It works for me.

That first shot will get your heart pumping. It seems that on the second shot the easier play would be to cut the 7 in and go up and down table for the nine.

It's not that low percentage of a shot, but I had just read some stuff on the diamond system and was playing a buddy I play all the time. I broke and didn't make anything and he played a safety on my that was something like the layout shown. He was talking a lot of shit and I kicked the one in and ran out...lol. That shut him up pretty good. It may not be the best shot I've ever made, but it's the only one I can think of at this time...lol.

Okay, these are GREAT kicks but honestly, based on the lay-out, I don't think any of you guys got-out from there. :D

This shot was shown to me no more than days before I executed it in a league match. Firstly, I'd just like to say that I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA where the cue-ball was going to go and secondly, I got out.

Hey Jude,

Great shot. Serious question. Would you normally have tried this shot or would you have attempted a safety placing the 5 ball behind the cluster? My first instinct would be the safe but I always love to hear what other players would do in similar situations. Especially ones who are good enough to compete in Joss events :-)

Thanks,
Dave

Playing a friend in a tournament a few months ago I pocketed the 4-ball and when getting position on the 5-ball, I overplayed it about 3 inches and couldn't cut it in. I made the above shot with pocket speed, keeping the cue ball for the 6 in the other corner.

It was sort of a fun shot, and as much as I practice 3-railers it wasn't one that was too intimidating for me. It was natural angle to make the 5 while missing the 8 and the 9 balls.

However, after I successfully pulled it off I went up to my friend (and opponent) and said, "Never let me do that in a tournament again!"

So of course, a few months later I'm faced with something even trickier:

I'm playing Oscar Dominguez (Ernesto's son, and an A player for sure) and he plays a jam up safe on me. This was down at Hollywood Billiards and there are always railbirds watching, so I figure: "Hey they want a show? I'll give it to them. I might as well try to make it if he's going to force me into a kick."

So off I go with another 3-railer, and everyone is looking to see if I make contact with the 6 because it seemed that it was almost impossible to make the 3-ball without fouling. Miraculously, it squeezed right by the 6 and made clean contact with the 3-ball to send it into the corner pocket. But of course woudln't you know, even with pocket speed to hold up for the 5 down table, I missed that shot and he ran out. Ah well, at least it gave the crowd something to watch even if was only for a few seconds!

When I first learned the shot, my success rate was a little better than it has been since so its hard to say. No safety there is guaranteed and the 6-ball poses a problem, no matter how things end up (I got lucky). In a Joss event, my priority would be to keep the cue-ball on the table and not disturb the only existing obstacle to get out so I would have to say, I'm playing a distance safety with the hopes of hooking behind the 9-ball.

And I thought I was aggressive! WOW!!! In your first shot, of course the defensive options are obvious. However, the second shot had a bunch of reasons for going the other way! If you took the below route with a medium-light stroke using a ton of right, there is a high probability of hitting the ball and real good chance of leaving him hooked. After contact, that cue-ball is gonna slide behind the 6 or the 7 while the 4 is likely going to hold up that 3.

I know you weren't asking for advice but I just felt like sharing..

i could have tried a two rail bank on the two ball, but a safe was the only real option. i played a good safe and ended up getting out on the next shot.

Rick

It's hard to diagram the shot the way it really was. I can tell you that I definitely thought about the cut at the time but it just didn't seem that makeable to me at the time. I didn't plan on the 9 going in for sure. I knew I had a chance to make it. I also knew I had a chance to make the 7 four rails. I figured that I'd take my chances with two opportunities with one shot. It worked and my opponent went into a coma and couldn't make anything after that.

30 years or so ago I was playing the first game in a tournament and was left with this shot on the 8 after running my group of balls (a phenomenal feat for me at that time). I couldn't use the natural bank because of the 5 ball, so I had to put just enough english on it to come back down table and kick the 8 into the corner. I make this kind of shot fairly frequently nowadays (thank you, me, for buying that awesome pool table), especially if the object ball is near the rail, but to hit this one at that time in my life definitely made it stick in my brain forever.

I can remember more bad ones than good ones but heres a couple.

First one is in an APA regionals tournament and I was the last guy. I was on the hill and got myself into a jam. I thought the 8 would go into the lower corner pocket and I thought I could get shape on it. I did neither.
Once I looked at it I saw the 8 did not go and that I was hooked.
My captain called TO and I told him I was going to jump the 2 and land on the 8 making it clear the edges of the other balls and go in. He thought I was nuts.
I made the ball.

next one is on a snooker table. tight pockets. I need the last two and he needs one. For some reason I just saw the angle on the first shot. He was
better than me( or so I thought) but I was up and this game was for
$400. Thats the second most money I have ever put on one game.
I made the 6(or orange ball) and came around for the 7(or the black ball).
The table is tight enough that you dont try them down the rails and I did not want to leave him easy so I shot it 2 in the side.
He was pissed. After that I always had his number and he tried several times to beat me. He still might have been better but I always got the money.

I was off the rail and the pockets on the table were very tight but I dogged it. I thought my partner was going to have a heart attack...literally. It made it back to me and I made it. Alot tougher shot and my partner finally calmed down but before then he was UPSET.

I was playing a friend of mine last year, and was hitting every ball he hid on me. So he plays a particularly nasty hook and says something like 'hit that !'. It just so happened that I had been practicing a shot that came up here, in a post from Colin C (our man in China), '20 ways to hit the impossible shot' or some such. Anyway, not only did I hit the damned 3 ball, but banked it over behind the six to hook him right back.

(oops, that's a bottom-left masse shot, not centerball as the WEI code indicates)

Against the same guy just the other night I played this shot, after having gotten a little close to, and on the wrong side of the 7. I was playing poorly, and thought this to be a good 2-way shot ... made the 7, got shape on the 8 in behind the 9, and ran out. Nothing spectacular to many here, but getting that tight a shape using that route with soft weight did made me smile :D
