I looking for some help. A little about me first. I'll try to write it as best as I can (quick sentences to make it as brief as possible) so you can realize what happens and maybe help me.

1. Started playing pool in 1968.
2. Became good enough by 1987 to consistently end up in the top 20 of my county 8-Ball league(very tough league, by the way)
3. Quit playing pool in 1989. (marriage, took up golf)
4. In 2001 doctor told men 'no more golf'. (back problems)
5. Late 2001 back playing pool. (honeymoon is over anyway) LOL

I'm surprised that it came back so quickly and I do believe at this point I'm a little better than I ever was.
I'm been playing some local and state tournaments ($75 entry fee, all good players) and consistently end up one out of the money. ARG!
I don't seem to be satisfied with that.

I know I have the ability to do better.
I can work the que ball very well and see improvement it over time. Of course I make mistakes with it.
I'm fairly good at making tougher shots and see improvement with that over time. Of course I miss them at times also.

The one consistent downfall is what this thread is about. When I say consistent I mean, after I lose a match I can regularly think back and remember missing an easy shot. Not necessarily because I was over doing it with english either. I just seem to forget that even on easy shots you still have to make sure the ball is going to go into the pocket.

Pre-shot routine right! Well, not exactly, I don't think. When I use my pre-shot routine, it works. The problem seems to be how to not get so involved in the game plan that I forget to do my pre-shot routine, especially on easy shots. It even happens when I'm practicing by myself. I walk up to a an easy shot and take it for granted that I'm going to make it.

Sounds to me like a very amateurish error, but I'm better than that.

There you have it as best as I can describe it. Been kind of interesting for me to try to write it down.

Thank you
JR

I believe you are talking about CHOKING. This is quite often brought on by adrenalin. There is a list of choke syndroms. Last ball, money ball, easy shot, just made a great shot and still patting yourself on the back, etc. I don't have a full list in front of me right now. I have been taught about an adrenalin wash. Controling it with breathing, pleasant thoughts, etc. I will get back with ya on this one. I am at work now and my book is at home.

CHOKE SYNDROMES

Identifying the causes of "choking".
EXAMPLES: Last Ball, Key Ball, Great Shot, Bad Shape, Ball in Hand, Break-Out, Combination, Lucky Guy.
Choking can be avoided if you understand what can cause it.
Having a consistant CheckList helps avoid it.
MAIN CAUSES of CHOKING
1) Error in ritual (CheckList)
2) Adrenaline
Adrenaline can cause a number of things which affect perfoemance.
By reducing the effects of adrenaline you can reduce your chances of choking.
CONTROLING ADRENALINE : The Adrenaline Wash
1) Stimulus Control
2) Breathing Rhythm

Captain, this is straidgt out of the book. This is what I teach.

CHOKE SYNDROMES

I'll be honest. At first glance at your response my ego jumped right in saying to myself. 'I am not a choker'. I've usually thought of choking only as a game ball miss. I think maybe I need to broaden my definition of the term 'choking'. I really think you've given me something to think about and work on.

I think I got in that mind set playing in the league while playing weaker players. Regularly you get another shot if you miss, so it's only a choke if you miss the game ball (8). Now that I'm getting into tournaments and regularly matching up with very good players, any shot I miss will probably be a loss and thus ending up having been a choke.

Maybe get into more of a golf mindset where every shot counts equally. Sort of trying to think out loud here.

Thank you very much Don

Choking

JR, sorry if I nudged your ego a tad. We all choke now and then. Dog a dam shot we could make 100 times in a row. Now you know why. You can't fix it if you don't know whats broken! I hope this helps.

By the way, do you have another name for it?

I was reading on another post that you play one pocket. A friend of mine, actually also my teacher right now, had been one of the best one pocket players around. He had some kind of opperation or a stoke or something like that, that changed that. I haven't really ask he what happend, but he is still a good teacher. Anyway I was wondering if you knew him. Fred McCan from Dillsburg Pa. I saw you are in Va. You might have heard of Finley's in York Pa. I play in there monthly tournaments (though crowd).

One Hole

Hey Capatin, sorry to hear about your friend. I don't know him. I think one pocket is one of the best games out there. I am fair and would love to get better. I would love to take a lesson from your friend. I am going to Valley Forge on the 26th and comming back to VA on the 27th. I think I go by York, thats what my wife said anyway, maybe I could hook up for a Saturday lesson.
Thanks, Don
