New Room
I'm in the process of writing a book about starting up a new pool room. The title's going to be "DON'T DO IT!!" Just kidding.
I put a new room together with 10 Gold crowns, bar and full kitchen. Total cost, I would estimate, was about $200,000.
The previous poster was dead-on. Make sure you do a lot of research! Calculate what you think you're going to have to spend and then probably factor in at least 25% more. Don't forget, with a new business, you're starting out with 0 customers. Don't set out with the idea that "If I build it, they will come". It takes a long time and a lot of work to make a start-up successful. You need to have a significant reserve of capital to get you through. You'll have fixed expenses that have to be paid every week/month regardless of how many customers you have.
My best advice to anyone looking into owning a room would be to try to find an existing room for sale. I don't know the situation in your area, but in Massachusetts, pool is declining BIG TIME. In the last year, at least 4 rooms (in close proximity to mine) have closed. It's much less expensive to upgrade an existing facility that already has a customer base.
Good Luck
