Opinions on new Schon's?

Milwaukee, lets play!

hey guys! im new here, but not new to the game... not an excellent player, but i enjoy playing and used to play 3-4 hours a day 5 years ago. Just now I finally got a table of my own after getting a house with my wife last year... so im getting back into the swing of things

anywho...

im from Milwaukee, and have long LOVED Schon cues... the product, the reputation, and the fact that its from my home town (still live here), all have had me wanting one for some time..

im in no position to buy a $1000-2000 cue, so I am looking at the lower models. This is fine with me as I am into simple looking things, and the ornate designs dont do it for me as much as a nice basic design does anyways..

so, i guess what im asking is... in the $5-700 area.(lower would be even better). is there a better cue out there?

also, what are the opinions of Schons on this site?

as a ps ;;;;;;

I have shot with a couple of 80s Mcd's for the last 10 years or so total.. they are ok with me, but i want something special

i know the Runde Schons are better... maybe I could find a nice used plain one in a good price range?

Hi

I was in a similar position to you a short while back and went with a Schon. I like the hit and the quality is good. Some folks will tell you that Schon quality has dropped recently, but I can't comment on the validity of that because mine is a Ltd model about 5 years old. The quality is excellent.

I do think it's better to buy used or reduced price older stock, though. If you pay full price or close to it and then decide to sell you will take a big hit. Modern Schon's do not hold their value as well as most entry level customs.

Other than that, the best bang-for-your-buck in the custom market is an Olney. Just my opinion. You should be able to get a basic four pointer to fit your price range here on the forum. Just keep looking. Great cues.

Hope that helps a little.

thanks!

i would be lookin for an older one i believe..

thing is i like the basic ones, and so many are the showy ones.. the one in the classifieds right now for $600 i like a LOT, but i dont have all the money just yet...

Olney's are nice huh? i have read about em but not seen any reviews really

As is often said, "you can't go wrong with a Schon". If I were in your position and for the price range that you mentioned, I'd get a new STL 7 or 8.

I love the STL 8. Best looking Schon out there if you ask me.

I had a basic STL 1 that I just sold and I also have a plain jane Olney which was also mentioned in this thread. I love my Olney, it's an amazing player and the quality is simply outstanding for the $$$ (less then Schon). The Schon was great too though. The fit and finish was very good, though not quite as good as the Olney, and the playability while very different was great I thought. I actually sold just the butt and kept the shaft because I will probably pick up a STL 8 one of these days. If you like the SS joint and the way the cue hits, I found the one I had to be very nice. If it wasn't for the Olney I would have kept it probably.

If you decide you want one check out Erik Lee Cues. He sells Schon at great prices.

I like the new schons as much as the old schons personally. Unless your talking old sharp pointed cues, I think the newer ones look great and play great.

If you can find a new one with sharp points (there are some out there) I'd buy one.

I don't get all the mystique about old cues. I've owned my fair share, and only thing I like about older cues more is the shaft wood tends to be a bit better. Unfortunately its hard to find a shaft over 12.5 mm if its had any play.

seems asthough I have found a SL3 that I like at a price I cant argue with... (1/2 my original budget)

wish me luck in getting it!

I have had many Schon's new and old.My feeling a lot comes from your price range.I would agree that Runde era Schon is the ideal way to go.But I have had a cue custom made by Evan Clarke and it's hits amazing!I also own a ebony unique made by Evan as well.I have always liked Schon's they are pretty consistent. If it helps you should try looking up Troy aka "KOINNKID" here on az he is a Schon dealer and always has many choices as well.I agree that STL7-9 are great for the price.I have done several deals with him he's a stand-up guy!Good luck..-JR

Sounds like a sensible choice. I prefer the less fancy styles, too. It will play great. They all do. If you played that many hours previously, it won't take long to get your game back in the groove. Having a table at home is a real advantage. Good luck with the new cue.

Schons

I've recently played with a newer STL1, a Runde Schon and three late 80's early 90's schons. The main difference is the shaft wood. One of the shafts on the newer STL1 was real nice wood. As long as you can find a decent shaft, the butt is just for balance and looks. Unless you get an exotic forearm. Then that changes things.
