I am building a prototype cue for my wife just horsing around with Diamond Back Rattle Snake Skin. The cue looks cool. I did shoot clear over the entire cue including the wrap due to the nature of the rattle snake skin scales have a tendancy to flake. I have made several gun grips in the past with rattle snake and everyone wanted the texture of the skin to still be felt. Here is the question. Clear coat and sand until its a solid smoth coating over the wrap area OR leave it so you can feel the scale texture.

I hunt rattlesnakes and have many skins. We treat them in a specific way where you will never have to worry about scales coming off and they also won't ever get brittle and crack. Now, you may have to worry about how the skin will wear after time considering it is thinner than leather wraps and usually isn't used in this application. I've thought about using Rattlesnake skin as wraps once I get to that point in cuemaking, but just haven't sold myself on it. do you happen to have a picture?

I would suggest looking at different ways of treating the skins and then you can leave the wrap exposed. As for spraying it with clear....I'm guessing you are better off smoothing it out, otherwise it will seem awkward and your finish won't shine as nice....

I will try to snap some pics later it does have a nice gloss but the textured feel is prett cool. Being in west Texas we are in the heart of DiamondBack country however I do not hunt them therefore order them already treated. I am not sure thier process. I need to find another seller of them that uses a different process I guess.

Where in West Texas are you? I'm originally from the Panhandle, but have moved to Dallas. I have hunted Prarie and Diamondback Rattlesnakes throughout the panhandle and into New Mexico and the panhandle of Oklahoma.

Since this is for your wife, maybe you should ask her if she wants to feel the scales or ??? btw, had a friend in Arizona who hunted them for their venom. We were going to California together and he pulled over to the side of the interstate. Had seen a big 'un. He put it in a gunny sack and put it behind my seat. I was not a very happy camper with it roaming around near my backside. He was crazy or maybe I was:) :) . Let me know how the wrap turns out. I like to try different things --- got some mastadonn ivory yesterday and will need to try it out.

Snake Skin Wrap

I have a python skin wrapped cue that AnnieO did for me. Clear coated smooth over the top - like mine - is what I would recommend.
