Patriot Games?

Just read Tony Robles' interview in the Interviews page and he mentioned something about a tournament called Patriot games. Here's a quote:

"We played in the Patriot Cup. To be honest with you, I made it to the Finals of the BCA Open and I had more fun playing the Patriot Cup then I did playing in the finals. It was so much fun having guys to cheer for besides yourself. You are so used to playing in an individual tournament and I have always enjoyed playing in team events. Frankie Hernandez and I played for Team Puerto Rico years ago. We always wanted to play for Team USA but since they didn't have any spots available, they ended up putting us on Team Puerto Rico. That was a lot of fun. I don't know if you ever heard about that tournament where we beat Team Europe, Team Mexico and Team USA to advance to the finals against Team Philippines. Team Philippines beat Team Puerto Rico in the finals. It was $50,000 for first. Listen to this line up. It was Efren Reyes, Jose Parica, Francisco Bustamante, Leonardo Andam and Rodolfo Luat. That's pretty strong. They beat us by seven or eight games."

Now this is a nice tournament. My question is, do they still have the Patriot Games? Where is it played? How come it's not televised? Who are the past winners? (Okay, that was four questions) Can anybody please tell me more about these Patriot Games???

The Patriot Cup is team play. A team representing the 'North' plays against a team from the 'South'.
They play a series of different games and also have a break contest. The Patriot Cup is held annually and the first two years it was held at Planet 9-Ball in Tampa. The South won the first year and the North won the second year. I'm not certain where the 3rd year will be held. It's a No Smoking event and the fans are encouraged to whoop & holler for their favorite player/team... Doug

Thanks smorgass bored. From tony robles' interview, though, i got the impression that the teams were divided into countries like he mentioned puerto rico, mexico, usa and the philippines. he did mention europe had one team though. maybe there are no real geographical boundaries to the teams?

Smorgass Bored is correct. I attended the first Patriot Cup and it was fun for all. I didn't go last year since I am now boycotting all events that involve Charlie the Dragon.

Tony was talking abut two different events. He did not mention anything called the "Patriot Games". He was talking about the recently held "Patriot Cup" and the time when he "played for Team Puerto Rico years ago". These are not the same events!

Ken - What brought this on? The boycot I mean. Charlie is no longer president.

Charlie and the UPA have been laid back of late and I think they are attempting to correct some minor problems of past and attempting to go in a new direction. Perhaps a new milder, gentler UPA.

Not sure if Cory is back in the fold or not. But he did play in the last sanctioned event. While Earl did not.

Anyway, the Patriot Cup was very good and fun for all. But reading between the lines of what Doug posted I take it the the Cup will not be at Planet 9-ball this year. Maybe it will be up North.

Ken - What brought this on?

I decided a long time ago to withhold my support for the UPA. I am in the process of reconsidering that decision due to what might be more responsible leadership. If they cease those tactics which I have heard about and which would fit my definition of extortion and racketeering I might attend an event. However, I learned at VF that they may not have put those tactics behind them, although they might have modified them somewhat.

Nevertheless, I will continue my lack of support for CW and his events. I've watched him play enough to be disgusted and don't want to be a part of an event that he puts on. This is nothing new. It has been my stand since seeing him play at Turning Stone and Chellmsford about two years ago.

I understand that Keith has joined so they must have changed something. Hopefully, the contract no longer threatens legal action if a player does not travel all around the country to play in all the UPA events. That can get very expensive even in a tour that calls itself "professional" (where the players can go broke).

Ken,

I have decided not to concern myself with it since it does not concern me. That is for you pro players to accept, or not.

Hopefully Robert Lipson will mold the UPA into a professional body that will appeal to all (or most) of the pros. Time will tell.

They must be doing something right, I haven't heard anything negative about the UPA in quite some time. And many of them play on the Florida Pro Tour.

I have some collector cards from 1993 that feature players in something called World Team Billiards. The Team Philippines card lists Jose Parica, Leonardo Andam, Francisco Bustamante, Rudolfo Luat, and Efren Reyes.
The Team Puerto Rico card lists Mike Lebron, Frankie Hernandez, Efrain Morales, Tony Robles, and Jose Robles. Is this the event Tony Robles was talking about?

By the way, does anyone know if these cards are worth anything?
