Stevie Moore was carrying the flag for US pool in the current (Oct 1 -3 ) Pattaya (Thailand) 9 ball invitational and the American pool community can be proud of how he handled himself both on the table and off. This event is 1st time effort to bring some of the best players in the world together in the Thai resort town of Pattaya. We have 16 invited players and 16 local qualifiers. The invited players include some of the best in the world including former champions, Effren Reyes, Ronnie Alcano, and Darren Appleton as well as Dennis Orcullo, Lee Van Cortesa and our lone American rep Stevie Moore.
Stevie sailed through the first couple of matchs beating Portius Reece of Denmark 9 to 5 in the round of 16. However in the Quarterfinals Stevie came up against Ronnie Alcano. I won't give a blow by blow description except to say it was back and forth. Stevie broke out in front two games to nil. Ronnie came came back to tie it. Stevie took it to 4 to 2 and Ronnie brought it back to 5 - 4 his favor. Ronnie went up 8 to 6 and then Stevie tied it up at 8 - 8. Just a heck of a match. Stevie broke and was running but came to a 4 and 5 that were tied up and just couldn't be untied in any safe way. He tryed and left Ronnie a very long and hard shot. Unfortunately Ronnie makes those. He did and went on finish on top. A lot of safety play though out the match with Ronnie getting the edge on that.
Stevie handled the crowd and the loss like a gentleman and I can say the Asian fans would like to see more Americans out here. Its top flight competition though. I asked Stevie how he came to be here for this event and basically he said he was in the neighborhood. He was playing in China and Darren Appleton received an invitation and asked him if he would like one. He took it up. If you want to be the best in the world you have to play the best and the competition here in Asia is certainly, at present and in my opinion, the best.
Effren Reyes also lost in the round of 16 to a Taiwan player, Lu, Hui Chang. Another noteable player who lost in the round of 16 was Liu, Chien Chieh, of Taipei. What is noteable, is that this is 15 year old kid who took Dennis Orcullo to 9 to 6 ! Amazing player. We will be seeing more of him. The Taiwan National Cue Sports Academy turns out some great young players.
The semi finals have three Philipino players and one from Taiwan. I hope some of my fellow AZers found this interesting and I will give the feed back on that tomorrow..
