Let B(R(X)) be the break shot; where X = (X1,X2,....,X10) is a vector of random variables denoting pool balls 1-10 and R(X) is the psuedorandom order of the balls in the rack (psuedorandom because the one and ten ball are fixed). If R(X) is fixed, then R(X) can be said to be "Pattern Racking".

We know that the break shot, B, is a pattern amongst the professional players as well. Therefore, with B and R(X) fixed, B(R(X)) lowers the amount of entropy created in placement of the balls after the break and can be seen as a method of "fixing" the game in the match. A fixed B(R(X)) places the desired balls within a specific radius after the break shot.

Pattern Breaking is one thing and is a skill. Pattern racking is a method of cheating and should be banned from all tournament play. If you pattern break a patterned rack, it's the same thing as fixing the hoop for one team on one end of the court for one half.

Look for our forthcoming paper on the Mathematical Analysis of Pattern Racking in the Cue Sports and why it should be universally banned.

I've seen Dennis O. do the pattern racking. No penalty for it. They do it and it doesn't get called on them.
