Paying via Goods & Services Question...

Over the years, I've sold a LOT of items online (Ebay, Gunbroker, Marketplace, forums, etc...) I have found that the "Goods & Services" payment method can bite the SELLER in the ass every now and again. In 3 situations, I received payment via PayPal using the Goods & Services option. I ship my item as described with tracking confirmation and and insurance and the packages all arrived at the destination according to USPS...

In one situation, the buyer claimed that the cell phone I sold and sent was "broken." Paypal requested they send it back to me before they will issue a refund. 4 days later I get a package in the mail and within minutes of the delivery confirmation showing delivery to me, the buyer gets a full refund. However, when I open the package, there is indeed a broken cell phone that was a completely different make and model in pieces. PayPal did NOTHING to resolve the situation, even after providing pictures. I was out a $450 cell phone.

Second two situations, the buyers claimed they did not receive the package, even though delivery confirmation showed it was delivered. The USPS post master at the delivery location was sent out to investigate. They could not determine what happened to the package and reported as much. PayPal refunded the buyers for their money AND USPS refused to honor the insurance payout because it was "delivered" in their system

In my experience, most people are good, decent human beings and the transactions occur without a hitch, but every now and again it doesn't work out. Just wondering if others have had a similar experience and/or how do you all avoid the type of unfortunate situations I've encountered when selling items?

That is always a concern. If you open a case with PayPal, they typically give you the money back

I just refuse to accept Goods payments now and am fine not selling if they won't send money another way

You really shouldn't be getting hit like that using goods and services. It's a business transaction and should be protecting the seller. I've never been hit like that. When cases open i stay right on top of things and don't slack.

As a business owner, I'm definitely on top of these things. PayPal is usually OK, but in the cases I mentioned, I was burned hard by both PayPal and the USPS.

Just wondering if others see the same thing and asking how they handle it... For me, I don't accept transactions that are for Goods & Services any longer. I offer my phone number in private and chat with the person buying my product and try to give them some confidence in the transaction before they pay. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out...

I remember the days when someone would send money for eBay items before they were shipped by the seller. Never had any issues with that, but that was a LONG time ago. I think people are indifferent these days to a seller/buyer when everything is conducted online with no personal interaction. Makes it easier to scam people when that's the new norm.

I will take goods and services from people I know which of course is who is going to go FF so it's a conundrum for sure.

I have on several occasions had things I ordered on Amazon and E bay be marked "delivered" by USPS when I never saw a trace of them so that could be real in your case because it happens a lot. Don't know how or why but it does happen.

So there is the line between the cost of requiring a signature and getting screwed. This appears to be the times we live in.

Put all costs in the selling price and wait for the right buyer. Me personally I'm listing my goods as not returnable. I know what I'm selling.
