Pechauer joint question

I am looking at having Pechauer make me a custom cue.
I was planning on having them not use their speed joint and have them install a piloted 5/16 x 14 joint instead.

My main purpose for this was the ability to use my Mezz and Jacoby shafts as well as any other piloted 5/16 x 14 shafts. I want butt that I can easily switch shafts in and out and given that I already have other piloted 5/16 x 14 shafts I thought with would be a good option.

I was curious to see if anyone could think of a down side to this?
Is there any reason I should do switch this joint out?

Nothing wrong with that, I wouldnt do it but I see your angle.

Just make sure thier joint OD is the same as your others or you may still have a problem.

I ordered a Pechauer custom and also had them change the joint... to Uni-Loc. I would have also considered going Radial or 5/16x14. Even 3/8x10. Anything standard would be better than a proprietary, custom joint IMHO.

The balance performance and feel of a cue is designed from tip to butt. So you're asking if it's okay to switch out different shafts from other makers. Well it's okay, but then why bother. Spend time and homework educating yourself about shaft wood, taper, ferrule, hit, and then give them your specs on the shaft. Have them make 3 shafts. Everyone will think you're really cool and smart.:)

LAlouie,
I totally understand what you are saying.
If this were my dream cue that may be the case but I don't see it the same way.
I am not one of those how feels that joint makes a big of a difference.
In this case, Pechauer already uses a SS joint so it is not like I will drastically changing the cue. It is not like I am going from a radial or 3/8 x 10 to a SS joint.
IMO, this is a very small change that I am making here.
I have a hard time believing this will change the performance of the cue.

Maybe it will and that is why I was asking.

I will not get 3 shafts because this will not be the last cue that I ever buy.
One will work just fine for me.

I like the 5/16 x 14 joints because I made the switch a few years ago and most of the shafts I use have that joint. For me that makes the butt more versatile to me to keep that same joint.

I agree with going 5/16 x 14 totally. Only downside might be resale.

Tom,

Go with the 5/16x14...but make sure that they use a joint that will definitely work with the pilot on your Mezz shaft. I have several 5/16x14 cues...one of which is an Espiritu...the problem with the joint he used, is the gap around the pin (for the pilot) is smaller than the pilot on my LD shafts...so the only 5/16x14 shaft I can use on that cue is the Espiritu shaft...all the others have too "wide" of a pilot to fit into that gap...

As far as resale...I have to say it would be more likely to help you than hurt you due to the more "universal" or more widely used 5/16x14 thread...

Jason

If anything I'd expect a real 5/16x14 to be more valuable than a proprietary joint, haha.

As it so happens the Pechauer joint is very similar to a 5/16x14. Even some 5/16x14 joint protectors can fit well. But not the other way around, if I recall.

I’m confused. I have been told that a Pechauer pro joint will fit their sp cues. Is this true? Also, will 5/16/14 fit their sp cues?

give them a call on monday. They do answer their phone and have good customer service. I have a pro model from them and it has their piloted pro joint.
