A rare piece of Pernambuco (caesaipinia enchinata) 1 1/2 " square
aged and seasoned for over 50 years. Pernambuco, known as the "music wood"
is known for its resonance and sustain which has made it famous for violin and viola bows. It is fairly heavy and very fine grained and sings when you tap it.
Pernambuco is a SITES protected wood and only old pieces, in small quantities,
are allowed to be shipped out of Brazil. I have seen 300 year old violin bows sell for more than $10,000 dollars. The Pernanbuco forests were not depleted for violin bows but for the red stain it produces. Prior to analine dyes Pernambuco stain was the predominate source of red dye. At $60 this is a steal as "music
grade" wood sells for $200 to 300 dollars a kilo. Excuse the misspelling on the wood.
