Piloted Ivory v.s. Flat faced Ivory

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences in hit and characteristics of these two different ivory joints. I have owned several flat faced ivory joints with three eights ten pin, but am possibly getting a cue with piloted ivory with a five sixteenth pin and have never had the opportunity to hit with one, any help would be appreciated. Piloted vs Flat faced

Hi, I don't have the definitive answer for you but, I've got two cues with a flat faced Ivory joint with a radial pin.....they both shoot exceptionally well.

I was wanting an Ivory Joint with a piloted 5/16-14 pin on my new cue from Jerry -R- but, he suggested that we use a flat faced radial joint which is what I have and I'm very pleased with the hit -- don't second guess the MASTER :D

The piloted "IVORY" joint has some complexities which may or may not be worth messing around with would be my guess!? :)

I currently have and play withboth...

here is my run down-

I have always played with a flat faced solid ivory big pin joint. I like the lively play and very solid hit. I also have a piloted ivory joint (5/16x14). The difference to me is the capped / big pin joint seems to me to hit much more solid - meaning the piloted joint seems to resonate different to me...making the hit more noticable and less "smooth".

hit is so subjective that I hate even describing these things...but in my opinion I would stick with a flatfaced capped ivory joint.

Thanks for the input but would still like to know more about these joints, I might be ordering a Gina and i don't know if he makes a flatface joint.-Ryan
 
The piloted Ivory Joint tends to amplify the sound of the ivory joint. This is a plus for some, especially those who like stainless joints, but a negative to most who prefer the quieter solid sounding hit of the flat faced joint. I would advise sticking with what you already know you like, unless you are just putting the cue into a collection.
