playability of a Poison VX 2.09 J/B Cue

First thread ever so here it goes....I got a Poison near mint VX 2.9 jump break cue on the cheap at a local pawn shop.

2 questions-
1- I really want to try is as my playing cue, and am ok with removing to phelonic tip and putting a tiger everest tip on it (my preference) to improve non breaking playability while understanding the break advantages may be reduced.

2- Should I just leave the Phelonic tip on it and break and play with it and get use to playing with a phelonic tip knowing of the miscue/english problems with this tip.

I am just an above average 8 ball league banger, so phelonic bca tip issues/concerns are a non factor, and I understand the 'ding' and have played pretty well with the phelonic tip in practice, but not league play.

Thanks in advance for your input as it will we heavily into my decision very soon.

i've played with a phenolic on my sneaky pete for sometime and i like the feel especially on a fast table. i switched to the phenolic because i break with my playing cue and after a couple of years i was developing cracks in the ferrule. so i sought out the phenolic to cut down on every 2 yrs having to have my ferrule worked on or replacing the cue. u will have to think about strategy and playing angles because the hit is pretty stiff, but this style suits my game. I am a high b or low a for what it is worth. choose the equipment that best suits your game.

I had the same cue up until a few days ago. Mine had what I think was the 'Sarin' tip. That cue actually played pretty good as well as breaking. I don't think I could seriously play with it though, I'm one of those guys that likes to use a lot of spin...most of the time unnecessarily :) I bet though with a good playing/breaking tip, that cue would be pretty nice.

I used to play with a poison J/B, but I got an aftermarket shaft to put on it. That way I was able to keep the phenolic tip on the other shaft for jumping and breaking. You will likely lose the jumping ability if you change the tip, and they jump well! I recommend getting an extra shaft, poison or other, with a playing tip. Best of both worlds. Phenolic tips on a player work ok but definitely limit your ability to play certain shots IMO.

Thanks for the input..played league with it last night and still not completely confident with it...but it does break nice.

I still have the Dale Perry and am very happy with it for sure.

extra shaft

Extra shaft with league play might not work.there's rules about breaking down your cue I believe you need opponents permission. But check rules for yourself they're all different
