Playing by the rules or bad sportmanship?

Last week during an eight ball league match on the first break of the match, I scratched. My opponent took ball in hand and placed it in the kitchen, but shot a ball from the kitchen into the corner pocket. When I realized what he was about to do (nobody was really paying attention: his team or mine), both my captain and I called his name twice to get him to stop....but it was too late. I took ball in hand, but he said I should have let him replace the ball and start over. This is my first time playing in a league, but not his.

I went on to win the match, 3 games to 0.

What would you have done?

Probaly just what you did. I may have been a little more insistant that he stop. You did the correct thing.

When I first started playing league and did not know the rules, *all* my opponents would let me go ahead and shoot an illegal shot without saying a word, then would take ball-in-hand. Some were watching constantly for any illegal shot so they could call foul and get ball-in-hand.

I sure learned the rules quickly this way! I guess that was the best thing for me, but I did not like it much at the time.

Note that some leagues have "no coaching" rules where it is against the rules to give any shooting advice. I guess thet means the opponent as well?

An illegal shot is ball in hand, if >you< catch it. Your captain can't interfere. You're not supposed to talk with anyone during the match, except for a coach(if it's allowed in your league) while you're shooting. The sportsmanship comes in when your opponent acknowledges(and accepts) your challenge truthfully.

I don't think there are any rules saying that you can't talk to others while your opponent is shooting. I used to play in APA leagues and everyone would always take/give advice freely as long as it wasn't the person's inning.

IMO, for you offending opponent, it can be likened to cutting toward your hand, once you slice yourself, you tend to learn pretty quickly.

I hope he didn't give you too much greif over it, as he(she) did commit a foul...

That is not always enough for somebody to learn. My father owned a wholesale meat business, my brother stabbed himself 3 different times in the gut when a boning knife slipped off the end of a bone. He never did learn to wear that steel mesh apron. ;-)

The guy who shot the ball in the kitchen knew what he was doing and was trying to get away with something. It was a foul under most rules.

Hilarious (sorta)! Yes, I did say 'once', but you are correct, once is often times not enough. Like me, I stabbed myself 3 different times...I never did learn to wear that steel mesh apron. ;-).

Albert- Is that you? My brother?! Don't ever forget: 160,000 mph- it's the law!!
