OK some of you may know I'm looking to get to the states somehow and start playing 9 ball seriously, just something I want to do before I get too old. Before anyone starts harping on about the moeny and all the negative things let me say I'm not bothered about that, its just something I gotta do LOL!

Anyway, I was brought up to believe that playing for money is the best practice that you can get and I strongly believe this, pay to learn so too speak. However I'm not interested in playing so average house Pro who never quite made it, I want to play the best!

So if I rocked up in Manilla and wanted to play Reyes or bustamante or I rock up in Taipai and want to play Hsia etc what is it going to cost me?

a) Is there any chance of playing them for a few long sessions without playing for thousands?

b) Whats the minimum they usually play for?

c) Do they usually give anything away (I hate taking starts from anyone but I think they will have a few years on me)

d) Are they approachable, anyone reccomend a top player who is genuinely a nice guy / women (Gremlin :-)?

Cheers

cheers that was helpful! Come to think about it though, I bet the women are much more approachable, though I'm not sure beating up on a women all day long is going to help me against the male Pros (just kidding gremlin, do you know any nice lady Pros that are looking for a thrashing? :-)

Number 1,

If you're looking to play a male pro in the top 20, I don't believe you'll have to play for thousands. If you play halfway decent find out where one of them is hanging out, get on a table and start banging balls and they'll probably approach you. I don't think many of them would have a big problem taking a few hundred off you. It's not like there's a waiting line of players eager to play them for thousands. Of course if someone does come along with a better game, you may get dropped in a hurry. However, all this changes if you're at a big tournament. At a big tournament, there is usually a lot of action and they'll be looking for the big bucks. You just need to find out where a player's home room is and check it out. You might have to wait a little but just think of all the money you'll be saving.

If I were you, I'd check out the women first. They play good and they usually have very good manners. I've heard that some of them are usually pretty anxious to find a good competetive game so they can keep their game sharp. Good luck!

Cheers, thats what I thought, these guys must need quality practice when they are not on the road. I have heard they would give the 7 ball which I think is crazy, I would bite a Pro's hand off if he gave me a seven ball once I'm playing daily.

I've heard the Phillipine guys are pretty nice guys but someonce like Reyes still wouldn't play unless it was for at least 500?

What about souqet, isn't he based at Amsterdamn billiards in NYC, whos he play with, whats he like? Any of the women Pros play in the NYC Area / NE?

don't know how much help i can be on this, but I've seen daulton at his own room in KY play some guys 5 for 100. and i've seen him play like 20 a game out there too. there was a guy from around my area (missouri) that used to play corey deuel before he went pro....the guy used to give him the 7 all the time. i actually have a few of those matches on video (definetly great matches). andy quinn in the st. louis area plays pros w/the right weight, he's not quite pro caliber, but definetly one of the best in this state. also awhile ago, danny bassavich came through and played a few ppl for 200, 400, and 500 a set. also side betting a few hundred w/onlookers. it's not hard to get a game w/a pro......not from what i've seen.

Number 1, here's the way it goes in the Philippines...

December is a nice time to come. Even Pagulayan will be here. Start out by proving your worth with less ranked players first. You will be surprised that even Marcus Chamat gets a handicap from "those who did not quite make it". You will prove your worth either as a formidable for or as an Automated Teller Machine. :)

After people have assessed your game, you will surely have the chance to get set-up with anyone, because handicapping here is very luring. Go to where they hang out. The venue changes from time to time. Manila is a small place, so you will know where the action will be.

As to the amount, $100USD can get you games with unknown pros Chamat usually plays against. A $500 USD wager will readily get you Gallego, Kiamco, Lining, Andam, Luat, Alcano, Orcullo, Gabica, Manalo, or Corteza. You might want to check in the Pan Pacific Hotel - they have a pool hall with a lot of gambling going on.

If you want Django or Bata, you will have to come up with at least $ 1,000 USD. Less than that, they will merely finance somebody to play with you.

Guys, thats real good stuff, cheers. Don't know why reyes or bata are so difficult to play though but I guess you gotta earn the right to play them or they have to much to lose?

The hotel tip is a good one, been to most places in asia but still not Manilla and haven't had much luck finding out where the pro's hang out. Sure thats a good start.

I was hoping to go to the IBC tour stop but it's been cancelled now for some reason as has the taipai stop too. But I believe all the other events are going ahead.

Thanks for the advice guys, anyone know of any pro's in the NYC area?

souquet does not play in amsterdam billiards. mika floats aroung manhattan. robles is at amsterdam east, and ginky is at master's in queens.

here in the philippines, its not only django or bata who are the world class players around here. there are some people like...uhm...me?! joke! :D
if you wanna be good at the sport, just come visit us here in manila, stay in some local pool halls and always look for the first table, there you will find good players. go first to sm megamall in cubao and look for the famous pool hall there, forgot the name though, but efren plays there sometimes, ask the owner if he can recommend a player for you to challenge.
dont worry, we are kind to foreigners and they will treat you very well, sometimes they even treat foreigners better than us filipinos!!! LOL!

Must be something in the water down there. The Phillipino pool players are awesome and some of the nicest people I have ever met.

not all buddy, some cant accept loss very easily. especially when he's older and much more when things arent going his way...:D
well, its a 19 yr old player talking here...:)

some top players stop here in bristol ct, about 2 hours from manhattan, busta was here I think two or three times in the last year. Santos is here quite often, especially during the joss tour times, not sure what he would play you for

Efren is very nice and approachable, I don't know what he'd want to play for. Santos Sambajon is also very nice, and he loves any kind of action, so you shouldn't have a problem getting a game with him. Bustamante only likes to play high-stakes pool, so you might have trouble getting cheap action from him. I've played Parica some $200 per game one-pocket before, and he is also very friendly. In the Phillipines there are some unknowns who can play any world-champion heads up, so watch out.

Pro-player,

How did you do against Parica? I watched him play one pocket a few times and I was pretty impressed. I like Varner's game too. And, speaking of Sonny (Santos), he aint too bad at the game either! The best one pocket that I've ever seen though has got to be Effren! I watched him give shortstops 13 to 3 for $3,000 a set and rob them. He was awesome!! His cb control is unbeleivable!

Let's not forget Cliff Joyner, Mr. One-Pocket himself. He is a formidable opponent in any one-pocket competition.

Rumor has it that he will be participating in Grady's "Legends of One-Pocket and Straight Pool" upcoming tournament, September 2-7, 2003, to be held in Columbia, South Carolina [www.gradymathews.com], speaking of which, Grady Mathews ain't a bad one-pocket player himself, if I recollect correctly.

I haven't had the pleasure of watching Cliff Joiner play one hole. I hear he's phenominal. Scott Frost and Shannon Daulton aren't too bad either. I wonder if Bucktooth will be going to Grady's tournament? Of course he wouldn't play in the tournament but he'd keep the action pot boiling.

Please remember, these guys are world class players, not millionaires. I recently watched Parica give the 'orange crush' for 20.00 a game and Danny Basavich rob someone for 20 bucks at 5.00 a game.

The best 40.00 that I ever spent was playing Charlie Williams 20.00 a set at Amsterdam Billiards. I won the flip, broke a ball in, made the 1, played a bad safe on the 2 and he ran the set out(race to 7). In the second set, I shot twice.

Yeah I recently went to Reno with a friend and wanted to play some pool there. We found a hall and The Monk was playing someone 9ball. I have seen him in Seattle before playing big dollars. My friend and I just played ourselves for a few hours. I really wanted to go ask him to play a cheap set just to say I did, but he had just started a one-hole set with someone when we were leaving. I'd have given him a $20 for the memory...would have given him all that I had.
