Recommend a cue for me please?
After a many years' long hiatus from playing pool, I finally have my own table at home and am playing with a 19 year old McDermott. I think I paid $120 for it in 1995, if that gives you any insight into the quality. I have no idea what model it is. It still shoots how I expect it to shoot but I'm always up for improvement and it seems that there have been "improvements" in cue technology but it's quite overwhelming for someone who is more interested in shooting than figuring out subtle differences in pool cues.
Besides a regular shooting cue, what type and how many "should" an above-average player with plans and time to get a lot better have in his arsenal? Jump? Break? (is that a combo stick all in one?). And do people actually use one butt and multiple shafts for regular shooting? I see shafts sold separately all over the place online- or do people keep the same butt forever and switch shafts over time? Please explain.
Money IS an object- I just want a high-quality stick- nothing custom, nothing with inlays necessary. I do like the linen wrap of my McDermott but it's not a deal-breaker. I want all of the money to go toward practical shooting quality. Maybe somewhere in the neighborhood of $200-$300. Is that feasible for a quality, accurate stick?
Please explain tip diameter pros and cons, if possible or necessary.
If you don't want to explain details and just want to name a good stick that fits what I'm looking for, have at it. I'm looking to hear from advanced players who know what they're talking about- no guessers, please!
