I have been going to this Tuesday Night Tournament, and it cost $5.00 to enter, plus a $2.00 Green FEE. Also they have an Option of putting in $5.00 for a Side Pot, but as I have never made it to the end when the money is Dispersed could some one explain how a Side Pot Works....

Recently at the AZ State 9 Ball Championship had if I can remember a $5.00, $10.00, and $25.00 Side Pot, as I said I was not there the Second Day when the Money was Dispersed. ;)

This probably sounds like a really stupid question, but I as an American guy living in Japan for the past 16 years, have yet to play in a tournament in the states. I've played in the Japan open 3 times, and also play a couple of the pro tour stops every year and I have yet to come across 'green fees.' What the heck is a green fee? What does paying the green fee mean? And if you don't pay?

A side pot is a separate prize fund open to those who want to get in. They can be good in many respects. You can have a pot for say the C and D players only that's bars the better players. That way even the weaker players have a chance to win money if they are the high finishers in the pot. Also the better players may put up a large sum in a pot that may even exceed the actual prize fund in the tournament. I used to do a weekly tournament with no entry fee just table time. I put up $200 for all the players with three places paid and the rest was side pots done by the players. Many weeks the pots would be over a thousand depending on the players. One night Mike Massey stopped in and there happened to be quite a few good players that night, Jimmy Reid, Danny D, I think Miz may have been there and a few others. They really pumped up a side pot for themselves. Massey won like two thousand. I highly recommend doing them at any tournament big or small. They provide a lot of incentive for the weaker players who can have their own tournament with in the tournament. In fact, the players can do it themselves, they don't need the promoter to do it for them. Usually pays 2 or 3 places but winner take all is fine as well. I am glad someone brought this up.

Green Fee is an Extra $2.00 to the House for Table Useage, and If you do not Pay the GREEN FEE you don't PLAY.

Personally I would like to see the Entry & Green FEE COMBINED..... ;)

Back in the day...(about 10 years ago)...Arizona used to have calcuttas....Someone took it upon themselves to complain to the liquer board or something along those lines and the clamps were put down on calcuttas in Arizona...

Some people want to have bigger entry fees, some just want to play... Think of side pots as just additional tournaments...$5 / $10 / $20.......If you decide not to get in one or any of the side pots and you win the tournament. the money goes to the highest finishing player that is in the side pot...Side pots are always 100% pay back...Sometimes in the case of the $20 side pot it will be winner take all........Just depends on the number of players that get in the side pot.

The $2 or that you see added to the tournament entry...Usually only $7 or $12 entry total for the tournament, usually goes to the TD that sits there all night and does not even get to play...I have no problem with that...

Actually most tournaments are 200% payback on the entry...Example $5+2 equals $7...If only 20 players get in the tournament the room will add $100 making the base tournament payout $200...Usually about half will go to the winner...$100 is a 14-1 return on your money (or 20-1 if you only use the tournament fee)...Anything over 10-1 return is a decent payout in my book for a weekly event...

Green fees

here in Kansas means you pay a green fee, like $10,
and they open the tables up where you don't pump
quarters into them during the tournament.
