Just saw a Face Book post from one of the pro's that read: "I wanna pay an entry fee so that people can charge other people and make money off of me showcasing my talents.....oh, I already do that. Thanks. I'm a genius!!!!!!!!!
Makes me laugh, especially reading all the posts asking the eternal question; what is wrong with pool??
First let me preface this post by saying, I too wish that the professionals of our beloved sport/game were paid much more for doing what they do, they deserve it. I wish leagues had greater pay outs. I wish tournaments had greater pay outs.
Most of all I wish that everyone at every tournament and/or league would stop complaining about the pay outs. Last I checked our league operator wasn't driving a Ferrari, and the most they make is their weekly entry. The last tournament director I spoke with, who by the way received nothing but grief for his tournament, the way it was run, the pay outs, the Calcutta, etc.....figured the nickels he made at the end of a week long event which took him a year to promote, equated to $4.00 an hour for his time, and his room at the venue paid for.
There are no Millions to be had in the pool community (yet). Most "players" (not even talking about pro's here) don't pay for table time because they feel the room owner owes them something for playing there, but then they complain when the tables aren't recovered.
We all need to do our part, the "people" watching the pro's showcasing their talents are pumping money into the system. Granted some less than others, but still money is being spent. The pro's need to showcase their talents, so they get fans, and/or request for instruction (if they do that) or request for exhibitions. The promoters of events need to make money or they won't keep spending their time doing it. Pool room owners NEED to make money or we wont have any pool rooms.
So, to the Face Book Poster: This is a path you chose to take, and right now playing this sport/game doesn't pay the way it should for your talents. For that I am truly sorry. You are an incredibly talented player and have skill that most of us only wish we could have. I believe that ONE day the money will be there, we as a community have to keep forging ahead. We as non-pros have to keep spending money in our billiard world, keep showing up to watch events, keep paying room owners table time, buying food and drink while we are there, buy cues, clothes, instructional books, and most of all when given the opportunity to complain or not complain, please choose the ladder. And thank the people that are trying to keep this sport alive. Regardless if it is a league operator, a tournament director, a room owner, or a vendor with a booth!!
A little goes a long way!!
Sorry for the long rant.............
