Pool cue extensions in the middle

I would like to know about peoples experiences (if any) with the cue extensions that are out there and are made to go in the middle of the cue. I don't know if they have an actual name or what they are called, but I am seeing more and more of them. I would think that they must affect the cues hit since they connect at the joint and are not (usually) made by the original cuemaker. Also, don't they have a big effect on the balance of the cue? I am curious if anyone has any experience with these. Please comment if you have. Thanks.

I think you are referring to the balance rite cue extensions ( http://www.ozonebilliards.com/balance-rite-forward-weighted-cue-extension-5-16-x-14-brf-14.html ) I am currently using one and I like it. Just started playing with it about a month ago. I liked it right from the first shot there is a slight change in the way the cue plays but just slightly. Only place you will be able to tell the difference in play is just the extreme touch shots. But the positives far out weigh the one negative (my only one negative) in my opinion. It lets your body be in a more natural position for shots where the cueball is out in the middle of no where and that's the best thing for me.

I have built a bunch of them for taller players around Georgia and South Carolina and they seem to like them. It is not something I want to do very often and was kind of glad when I saw someone now mass producing them.

You have to be careful with the one you order. They will not fit some Schon's, Jacoby or Preditors because of the pilot in the shaft. I got one for my jacoby and it would not fit. I called and was told they did not know that but now have put it on their website.

Does the 5/16x14 model fit mezz piloted shafts?

Chris, I think the reasons that people are asking you to make them are because:
1) You have a great reputation and will be more precise with making sure they fit and hit nicely.
2) The mass produced ones seem kinda ugly, especially when you have a nice custom cue. Throwing that thing in the middle of a custom cue seems wrong. Making ones that match might be a real nice niche for a cuemaker like yourself.

Had the opportunity to try one and am not really a fan... Have been using an extension that screws into the but for 5-6 weeks and am really liking it... May have a lot to do with where you like the balance but to me the extension in the middle made the cue feel dead..

As for the one I am using it just kind of balances the cue for me since I was always out on the end of the cue already.. I rarely am actually on the extension except for shots where I need to reach for a shot.... I am now to the point where the extension never comes off unless something is in the way like a wall LOL my favorite table where I play has one spot where it's a problem and thats only when playing one-hole and someone decides to freeze me to the headrail near the left hand pocket...

SO I guess what I am saying is an extension in the middle will effect the hit on all shots where the one on the rear will only effect the hit when actually being out on the extension with your grip.. I think that is a worse scenario than the weight being added to the back vs the front for balance even tho the balance rite likely weighs 2 ounces less than the other type of extension...

What I would like to know is how much does one of the balance rites weigh? I'll weigh my piece of s... err cuetech extension tonight and post it.....

Chris

Yes, I bought a Balance Rite extension with 5/16x14, it fit perfectly with Mezz Deep Impact shaft from a Mezz Power break II cue, also fit a Joss shaft.

I made up a set of those for myself of different sizes as well as for a few other people. They work fine but can be quite a hassle putting on and off. Anyone who thinks these are new is mistaken. I got the idea from some I saw in Ray Martins case like 25 years ago. I did something different though.

I made them from Poplar wood and an aluminum screw. Also I made the insert from Delrin. I don't think it weighed maybe 1/2 an ounce. It worked great except for taking it on and off. I am kind of short and was using it more then most so maybe that was a problem for me. In general I think they are good when used only when you really need it. I used the bridge most of the time anyway.

In reading the Ozone ad it think theirs are meant to stay on the cue for tall people. Not really to help shorted players have added reach. I guess you can use them for both except for a short player they probably would be holding the cue in front of the wrap if they tried to play with it in general.

The Deroo cue extension is the one I like the most. Adds a minimal amount of weight to the butt yet removes the weight bolts some use. It is well balanced to shoot with and very sturdy. When you pop it open during a match it usually makes your opponent's eyes pop out!

I have tried one and It actually feels fine.
Personally I prefer a 30" shaft and use my Mezz extension when I have to reach for a long shot.

I had the black 3 inch extensions made by Donavon Mickelson at Micks Cue Sales for 3/8x10 and 5/16x14 joints. Good guy and excellent service.
The two 4 inch plain maple are BalanceRite extensions that I sanded to remove their gawdy logo. They are for 3/8x10 and 5/16x14 joints.
The sporty fiddleback 4 inch extension was made by Bob Owen to fit my favorite Bob Owen cue with a 3/8x11 pin.
Since I'm a short guy that plays lousy shape and struggle using a mechanical bridge, I've been using this type of extension for a few months. I have definitely won games that ordinarily I would have lost without the extension.

I have a radial balance rite extension and love it..... Takes a bit of getting used to (when you use it all the time) but I leave it on since I'm too lazy to take my cue apart only when I need an extra few inches lol
