What are the different tapers you can get for a pool cue shaft. How many different tapers are there? Not talking about low deflection shafts. Thanks!

On solid shafts, There are many, ones I can think of:
European
Pro which can be anywhere between 10 - 15 taper
Conical (like a snooker cue, cone shape)
Parabolic (curved)

A traditional pro taper is straight from the tip to about 12"-15" then they start to increase in taper/diameter. More expensive cues have this taper. Maybe in the $200 ish and higher range. As for of the conical taper you will see this alot in "house" cues and well as billiard cues and probably snooker cues. It gets larger from the tip to the joint

Sort of. A 'pro taper' generally has 1mm of growth over a 10"-15" distance. A lot of cf shafts, because of the rigidity of the material, now have really long parallel sections. 15"+ is not un-common.

Yeah, for me this is the main advantage of CF. With maple it used to be pretty impossible to get a 12.5 mm w/long pro taper and get a stiff hitting cue. Maybe thats what some folks call “more energy transfer” (I never really know what folks mean by that). That and the fact that you basically can’t ding or nick them, ie their durability. With many CF, those practical benefits do come with a touch less “feel” than a great maple shaft, but a few of the better CF shafts come very close and make the tradeoff worthwhile . All very subjective, of course.
