...Just got back from Side Pockets in Lenexa, KS. Couldn't hit a bull in the butt w/ a box o' rocks since I've not played in months but that's OK. I'm going to probably try to get back into playing again after years of extended hiatus and never really learning enough as a "student" so to speak. Anyhoo I talked to a real nice young guy - goes by Jason - 'cause I was asking 'bout finally finding a cue to my liking for once in my life w/o really ever having one and he was supposedly (according to one of the guys in the vicinity) toting a $2 grand custom so I figured I ought to also ask him who to "watch," and he said a couple guys at Shooters in Olathe on Monday nights ... Williams and Meyers were a couple names he mentioned and I forget their first names. No biggie, I'm definitely not takin' numbers ... just wanting to see some top flight guys (on the KS side 'cause it's closer to where I live and Raytown is probably too far) in order to try and maybe start to help improve my own extremely raggedy game. ... This Jason also mentioned I might want to talk to a Mr. Patrick (Doug I think if memory serves) about cues and apparently a Dan Trigger does work on them, as it's been suggested at some point on down the road I might want to customize a ferrule/tip, depending, especially if I opt for a production. They had a BUNCH of $89 cues at SP but it's a bit hard for me to get jazzed about that. Then they had a few more expensive ones and I took pictures of all 100 (about 50 cues per case) w/ my phone but I seriously doubt that was really any use. Anyhow, I just kick that out there since I might be diving in more or less head first but I can't predict the future. I'm always open to second and third opinions or suggestions. I might want to try to get into a tournament at some point in the fairly distant future but I need to figure out if I can get any sort of competitive handle on the game - and if not recreational is always perfectly fine and great fun too. Sorta wish I had a mentor but I spse everybody probably does at some point. Bla bla sorry for the lengthy boring post but hopefully it can't hurt to shoot the poop..

Best,
Paul

I play APA out of lenexa on mondays and have looked at their cue collection just grab a second cue. I use a meucci original MO-4 brand with a black dot shaft and no way could I use one of the cues there. If i played with it enough and got use to it then probably but just stick to to a name brand cue like meucci, predator, mcdermott. Theres no need for a $2000 custom cue but some people will disagree.
shooters is a good place, Sharks and clarette club are good too. If you go to pool4u.com they show daily and weekly tournaments and where they are. Next saturday the 4th there is a $40 9 ball tour stop at Sharks in Shawnee, KS.

Proofsc, very good to hear from you...at SP I snagged one of the APA sheets they had on the check-out desk which says "APA Leagues MoKan Team Registration Form" and "Spring Session starts the week of Jan 2, 2013." Maybe the 2013 means 2014? Anyhoo, I don't have a current membership and obviously don't have a team. I guess I'd better back up ... I have only a very rough outline of what any of this APA stuff means except I read somewhere - maybe even at the APA website - apparently teams also have each individual rankings amongst them and play w/ some sort of handicap system. Also, on the SP website under "Events" apparently it says 9-ball tournaments Tues/Thurs/Sun at 9:30PM and 8-ball at 1:00 PM Sat (which I'm pretty sure I saw them playing today on 7' tables?), so it surprises me you'd mention Mon but maybe website info isn't completely current. ... I've never been inside Sharks but I know exactly where it's at and it's only a short drive so I'll probably go even if just to do some watching.

Now on another subject I went to a gentleman's home today and he seems to be a bonafide cue collector and had literally a half dozen used cues he's selling - in addition to the ones he's keeping for personal use. One of them (the cheapest of the lot apparently and the only production model - the rest he's selling are custom - appears in the 3 iphone pictures below):

Now he said he thought this was an LS7, and although he said his memory wasn't at all perfect about the model #, he pointed out the "windows" in the lower butt (as opposed to diamonds or dots &tc) as a distinguishing feature. We know for sure it's a Schon. I mentioned I'd heard good things about (even) production Schons and he fully agreed. So I glided the shaft through my bridge and noticed only a few VERY slight (slightest-of-slight but still immediately noticeable - but probably only to someone checking for them) dings. So the cue is DEFINITELY used but never abused. ... There are a few tiny, much smaller-than-pea-sized "bubbles" in the lower butt finish as well as in/on the "window" areas. All in all, the stick seems about "95-97% perfect" to pull a random percentage beings I didn't examine it like an expert or jewler would....We had a few other things we were also discussing is all....

I'm about as curious as could be about aprox. what a potential buyer might normally offer on such a cue, if he wasn't desperate, and the seller did give me a ballpark asking price, which in my (extremely novice) guesstimate now seems somewhat steep after looking at pricing on new Schon cues. He said there have been no modifications to this 19.7oz, 12mm tip unit. I doubt I'll end up w/ this cue for personal reasons; I'm still halfway tempted to ask about estimated pricing in another, separate thread ... but I think that maybe could/would come across as ungentlemanly or inconsiderate given the circumstances so maybe I'd best keep it simple. I didn't alter the pics in the least except to crop and bump from 72dpi to 144dpi ... My apologies for the lousy, quickly taken shots w/ a phone I'm barely familiar w/. If I did it over I'd use a camera or phone I'm acquainted with and would have "practiced" once or twice on another set of "first pictures I've ever taken of a cue stick." Sorry for long post(s) but if I knew answers to a whole bunch of questions surely they'd be shorter.

Best,
Paul

At SP there is league every night basically between APA and BCA. APA is a handicapped league based on a 2-7 format with 7 being the highest. I'm ranked a 7 so if I play a 3 I have to win 6 by the time they win 2. The reason tournaments are at 930 is because of league, that's when it is over. Unfortunately all the tournaments are played on bar box but hopefully one day a 9ft tournament will happen. As for the dings in the stick you can buy a buffer and buff them out or just the neck of a beer bottle to do it. It doesn't look too bad looks like it could be a good stick. You can always buy a new shaft as well to get it more to your liking. Oh BCA is pretty much the opposite of APA, I don't know what rules you are familiar with but it's not handicapped and it's call pocket. The only time slop is allowed is when the ball goes in the pocket you called despite it bouncing off of everything.

Thanks both Dusty
and Proofsc - that goes a long way to rough outlining what goes on at SP. Much appreciated!

Now Dusty, I think he was asking in the neighborhood of 4 Benjamins. I was trying to find something Schon I could compare (new) at the seyberts website and it looked like (I'm GUESSING) it may have gone for around 6-700 list which might mean around 4&1/2 or 5 or so if it were on special or discounted? I mean it is used, it does have some (fairly/very minor but immediately detectable) flaws (tiny nicks in the shaft - but possibly just not cleaned?) that probably affect performance VERY little. People are all over the board on prices for used cues it seems ... and the gentleman was nice enough to show me his collection so I'd hate to offend by "asking around willy nilly," or posting very speculative amounts, but if anybody wanted to PM me an opinion what it might go for - so there's no advertising something I might not be able to afford...I'm very reluctant to ruffle feathers - especially the sellers - so PM seems best. ... He does have some other more expensive fantastic (used) cues for sale but I know I couldn't afford any of them.
Best,
Paul
