The main reason I have an 8-foot pool table in my game room is because Mrs. 9BP insisted that we be able to convert to Ping-Pong. That's not possible on a 9-footer, so I compromised. Glad I did, too.
We can convert our table from pool to Ping-Pong in just a few minutes, and it's such a great cardio sport that I just love playiing it. And after a good session of smashing Ping-Pong balls, my pool game seems to sharpen up.
Both pool and table tennis are played on a nearly identically-sized surface. I'm thinking lots of pool players probably play Ping-Pong too. Both are collision sports, and both require hand-eye coordination. Pool requires better fine motor skills, table tennis demands better reflexes and stamina. Or maybe not.
Anyone interested in organizing a tournament at next year's DCC? If we could get 16 with a $20 buy-in, that would create a prize fund of $320. If there was more interest, you can do the math. The DCC is an intense affair, and some of us type-As require release valves. This could serve as one. Remember too that the guys who compete in the World Series of Poker usually concoct some off-campus compeitition, just to blow off steam.
Others of us would never enter the tournament -- we'd be there to watch or visit the action room -- but we would be willing to test ourselves at table tennis.
Surely we could find space for this tourney somewhere in the DCC venue, wherever it's going to be. So I'm curious -- who out there plays? Who out there would go for it? Who out there cares?
