Pool Rooms / Downtown Atlanta

Sweet Marissa

I'm in downtown Atlanta for a conference until Friday evening. I'm staying at The Westin on Peachtree Street.

The Pool Room in Duluth and Mr Cues II are both thirty miles away, and The Pool Room in Marietta is even further. Unfortunately, I'll be getting up at 6:00 am tomorrow and Friday, so these would be too far for me to travel to, especially with the rain and Atlanta traffic. Are there any other pool halls nearby?

Thanks in advance,
Marissa

My old favorite haunt is in Midtown - formerly DuPree's, it's now called "The Independent". Find your way to Monroe Drive, just north of Ponce de Leon Ave. There's a high school football stadium on the west side of Monroe - a shopping center/etc on the east side. The Independent is in this shopping center, in the back area (take the main drive back from the stop light). You'll see it on the second level, right near the theater, above a restaurant.

They've only got 8-footers, but it's a good place.

And actually, Mr. Cues isn't really *that* terribly far from downtown. It's maybe a fifteen/twenty minute drive.

I live just South of midtown and it takes me only 15 mintues to get to either Cues or The PR in Marietta. I also play at the Independent (APA) and the tables suck but it is right there. There is also a place on Peachtree, downtown called Bradley's, I think? It is right next to a army surplus store.

I believe Buckhead Billiards is still open. I've only been there once and I barely remember it. My shop actually refelted their tables one time and they told me that they have been felted just as much as the backing could take. I don't recall what tables they had either. They should have a website.

There is a Bar off Lavista and N. Druid Hills that has plenty of Coin Operated tables. It's called "Famous Pub and Grill". It's a bar/restaraunt/pool hall playing classic rock music. The other side it's a dance club with a couple of tables. And it's real big. But if you can make it there you might as well go to Cues 2.

Do not go to "International Bowl" off of Buford Highway. They have some Beautiful Diamond tables but they have regular felt. The tables are far from level. And they are way to close together.

I know of a couple in Downtown and I'll try to recall them. The problem with Downtown Atlanta is that the property is too expensive to run a pool hall. You can fit 10 people in the area a 9' table takes and they all could be buying drinks.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. If Bradley's is on Peachtree, I think that would be closest. Does anyone know anything about it (what kind of tables, cloth, et cetera)?

I'd forgotten about Buckhead Billiards - been away from Atlanta for six years and hadn't been there for some time before I moved away. Not too bad a place, but parking sucks in that area.

I doubt Marissa's looking for a Famous Pub sorta place. :D

Honestly, if the cloth on the tables is that much of a concern, I'd just bug up 85 to Mr. Cues. It's really *not* that far from downtown.

Hey Marissa,
Good to see you back!
As John said, time wise, a short ride.

Hey Marissa,
Just to let you know a little history about where you are staying.
The design drawings for the Westin around 1972, at that time was billed as 'The Tallest Hotel in the World', & was refered to as the 'The Henry Grady Hotel'. The original name was due to the fact it was built on the demo-ed site of 'The Older Henry Grady Hotel & Henry Grady Office Building'.

How do I know this: I was a member of the original design team for the mechanical systems, 'Britt Alderman Assoc.'
I am the one that drew the orginal design drawings for the Plumbing System for all of the 52 guest room levels.
My friend Lamar Lee is now President of the new 'BAA Mech'.
In 1972 I left the design world & went to the contracting side of the construction world.
In 1973 I was hired by by the mechanical contractor that installed the mechanical systems & did all the construction plumbing drawings for what is now known as the 'Weston'.
In 1985 I was an employee of an Atlanta Mech. Contractor.
I was called in to assest with their renovations.

As you can see, I have off & on 13 years vested in the hotel you are staying in.

"Have a nice day",
Lamar

There is an upscale place about three or four blocks down from the Hardrock.
