I have a chance to pick up a 8ft Gandy Sportsman, 2 sets of balls, cover, some house cues, cue rack and a nice overhead light for $700.

Is the Gandy Sportsman a decent table?? I am only familiar with the Gandy Big G tables.

A Gandy table should be a fine table for your home. I recovered some about 15 years ago and remember that the skirt of the table was not really heavy duty. If the table is too old, you may have to replace the rails, as they might be dead. Also, make sure you check the slate for cracking. If you are not going to set the table up right away, there are proper ways of storing the slate, but I am not sure if it is upright or flat. The price sounds reasonable. Remember that you will need a big room for that table, with 5' around each side... so the room has to be 18'x14' MINIMUM.
