How well does this tool work? Does it have the reputation of scratching the ferrule like the Ultimate Tip Tool. Is it not recommended to use on laminated tips such as the Talisman?

The Porper tool is conical so it only really burnishes tips that fit the cone.

Do NOT use on any layered tip as it will weaken the laminations.

So what procedure do you recommend for burnishing laminated tips? Following the instructions at the Talisman website?

I now use a lathe, but it's not mandatory. When I first started, my "lathe" was one hand holding the tip and the other hand causing the shaft to spin while pressing against my leg.

Burnish with a small piece of un-dyed leather and a bit of saliva. Not too much pressure -- just enough to create some heat. Too much heat will also weaken the laminations.

I totally disagree. I've been using the Porper tip burnisher for a long time on laminated tips and it works great. A no brainer! It is conical and therefore it fits almost any size tip and in seconds the tip is burnished. A lot easier than by hand and I haven't had any problems with laminated tips.
