I'm looking for some tools to make home re-tipping easier and get good results. I would love a Travel Tipper or a Willards but there out of my price range at the mo. :( I've read about the Big Shaver and it sounds like it does everything i'm looking for at a very reasonable price, but is it any good?? Any feedback from people that have used one or has any experience with them would be very much appreciated.

I like it and it does a great job but it does take some practise to use properly for trimming the installed tips. Try a house cue or two first. I, personally, wrap the ferrule and the top of the cue with a thin layer of masking tape to avoid accidentally gouging it (like I did the first time I used it).

I think I've got the hang of it after 2 years and likely wouldn't gouge a shaft nowadays, but I still use the masking tape and won't risk trimming a tip without it -- especially on a shaft from a custom cue-maker.

YMMV....

I have a friend who has one and every time I remember I get him to fix my tip. If you use it correctly it is a perfect tool. You need to use surgeon's precision but the result is perfect. If I ever remember I am going to get him to pick one up for me.

I like the Big Shaver for the same reason I like the Ultimate Tip Tool ---
They both bring me repair work when the ferrule gets damaged... :)

Thanks for the replies. The main problems that i'm having are getting the ferrul flat and square, they always seem to end up domed and getting the tip flush with the ferrul. I've got some money coming my way soon so i'm tempted to get some kind of mini lathe, tho that seems a lot to pay out just to change a few tips.
